Frank Runzler Obituary

Runzler, Frank J. May 26, 1926 - October 15, 2010 Frank Runzler, loving husband, devoted father, fun-loving grandfather and loyal friend, died peacefully after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 84. Frank was the second of four children born to Frank W. and Marguerite Gruenwald Runzler of Burlington, Wisc. He attended grammar and high school in Burlington, where he played on the high school football team. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as an airplane mechanic and crew chief, maintaining B-17 bombers in Europe and Africa. After receiving his honorable discharge, Frank attended the University of Wisconsin, and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where he made many lifelong friends. After graduating he moved to Chicago, where he met his future wife and soulmate, Marguerite "Mac" Gendron. Married on Nov. 27, 1952, Frank and Mac had five children, Michael, Terry, John (who died at childbirth), Maripat and Nancy. The family frequently moved in those early years, living at various times in Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, California and Texas before settling for the last time Irvine, Calif. While in Illinois, the family lived in Park Ridge from 1960-1967, where Frank served briefly on the District 64 Board of Education. He was also a member of the local VFW and American Legion chapters. In Irvine, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Professionally, Frank was a salesman's salesman. At various times in his career, he sold everything from industrial goods to food products and oil field supplies. His life and career changed when he was named general manager of Pik-Nik shoestring potatoes in 1967 and moved his family to San Jose, Calif. He later was promoted to general manager of Gebhardt's Mexican Foods in San Antonio, Texas. Ultimately he returned to California in 1977 and founded his own company, Frank J. Runzler and Associates, providing supplies to oil fields throughout southern California. While Frank loved his work, he adored his family. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to making life better for family and friends. He assisted his parents and aunts in their later years, selflessly giving his time to ensure they were never left alone. Similarly, he supported his wife and children, lifting when they fell, celebrating when they succeeded. In his final months, he was saddened that illness left him unable to help others. Frank was devoted to his Wisconsin Badgers, loved sports of all kinds and enjoyed golfing with family and friends. He enjoyed hosting spontaneous barbecues at his home for his children and their families, smoking a good cigar, reminiscing and telling a good joke. His loving wife Mac was his constant companion, and stood by him as disease slowly robbed him of his vitality. Always devoted, she was at his side during his final hours. Frank is survived by his wife, Mac; their children, Michael, Terry, Maripat and Nancy; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Fr. Colm Conlon celebrated a funeral Mass at St. John Neumann. Interment will be at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California. The family asks that any donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Parkinson Foundation. Not sure what to say?

I apologize for this late condolence. I only recently learned of Frank's passing.

My deepest sympathies to the Runzler Family at your loss. Frank was indeed a unique and very special individual. I only met him in person a very few times. But we had a truly meaningful long distance relationship.

Frank & I both worked for separate divisions of Beatrice Foods (Gebhardt & LaChoy). I left Beatrice to join Borden's corporate research team. One year later, I was retro-sized. I went to work for a meat company in Cincinnati and Knoxville. The owner wanted to work with some of the Beatrice divisions to provide them with precooked meats for their various canned and frozen products. I was back on Frank's radar once again. Then Beatrice in their infinite wisdom discharged Frank.

Having just been through a similar experience at Borden's, I began to call Frank to offer my assistance and support. I was full of ideas and suggestions. Frank tried a lot of them. Many times I would call at a particularly low point and Frank would often tell me how my calls picked him up and gave fresh direction when he felt like he had tried everything. I always felt like Frank was far above of me on the food chain, but I wanted to help and he was very receptive and appreciative. Over the years, many, many times I would call and Frank would say "I was just thinking about you" or "I was thinking about you just yesterday."

Once he told me his family was coming in to celebrate his birthday. I wrote down the date & made it a point to call him at the end of May each year after that to wish him the best on his birthday.

Even though it was mostly long distance , I felt like Frank and I had a unique friendship that made him feel like part of my family. I hope you find comfort in the fact that the Runzler Family will not be the only ones who miss Frank now and going forward.

God Bless Each and All of You in Your Journey into the Future.

My condolences to Mac, Michael, Terry, Maripat, and Bitsy. When I was a little girl in Park Ridge, IL, Mr. Runzler seemed to me a scary giant of a man, who ran a very tight ship.

Settling in Irvine as an adult was inspired by the fact that my childhood neighbors lived here. I recall fondly the Halloween stops with the kids in recent years. It was wonderful getting to know Frank as an adult. I discoverd Frank to be a profoundly loving and devoted family man. Still very tall, but no longer scary!

Mac, you took such loving care of him throughout his illness. It must be quite a shock to be without him now. May 2011 be filled with good memories and new experiences for you and your family. I would love to see you soon. Love you!

Mac, I am very sorry for your loss. Frank was a special man. I remember how he had such a great time wine tasting in Temecula. I feel certain that if there is port in heaven he is pouring glasses for fellow tasters.

I knew Frank through his daughter Maripat... She totally adored her father and looked up to him as a golfer, business man, dedicated Catholic and ultimate role model!!! When Maripat was living in Texas and flew into Las Vegas for a girls weekend away, Frank drove the 4+ hour drive just to have lunch with his daughter... Frank appreciated Maripat for just being herself and the feelings were on his daughter's side, as well... Even though we only met a few times, I feel I could feel your warm, loving ways through Maripat's love for you... You will truly be missed, but you are now in the company of many wonderful people (my dad is one)... Your daughter's good buddy, Diane Judd
