Jose Garibay Obituary

O.C. consoles the family of slain Marine

Friends and strangers alike offer comfort and aid to loved ones of Jose Angel Garibay, the first local military man to die in combat in the war in Iraq.

By JOEL ZLOTNIK, JEFF ROWE and BRIAN MARTINEZ

The Orange County Register

COSTA MESA – A Huntington Beach woman has offered her burial plot. A Santa Ana businessman wants this year's Cinco de Mayo celebration to honor the fallen Marine. And an Irvine fast-food chain doesn't want a mourning family to worry about meals.

The death of Marine Cpl. Jose Angel Garibay – the first from Orange County to be killed in combat in the Iraqi desert – has brought the war home. And as one family grieves the loss of its beloved son, brother and nephew, a much larger community has opened its arms to embrace them and the memory of a Marine who won't be coming home.

The Garibay family has been inundated with support this week from a steady stream of visitors. The family's humble west-side home has hosted friends and strangers alike bearing food and flowers and offering condolences, money and prayers. Garibay, 21, from Jalisco, Mexico, told his mother before he left that he wished he could become a U.S. citizen.

"I love the United States and want to be an American hero," his mother Simona Garibay recalled him saying.

KEY FACTS

The Garibays

Donations to the Garibay family may be sent to St. Joachim Church, 1964 Orange Ave., Costa Mesa, CA 92627. Please write "Garibay family" on the correspondence.

Family and friends were planning a memorial parade Sunday in front of the family's home at 1013 Arbor St. in Costa Mesa. A time has not yet been set.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

The Newport Harbor Harbor High School graduate became a hero when he died Sunday near An Nasiriyah after Iraqi forces pretending to surrender ambushed Marines. A Huntington Beach attorney wants to fulfill Garibay's dream of citizenship.

Former Marine Donato Leombruni, 38, has offered to help the family fill out an application for posthumous citizenship. Immigration law allows citizenship for those in the armed services killed in the line of duty. Garibay was a legal U.S. resident, granted amnesty with his family.

"I read he was getting ready to apply for citizenship, and I want to help them do this to maybe show his mom how much we appreciate the sacrifice," said Leombruni.

State Assemblyman Lou Correa, D-Anaheim, said he hopes to bypass the bureaucracy and will work with local and federal legislators to grant Garibay citizenship. "It's kind of sad. We're losing American men and women; the least we can do is honor them by giving them the citizenship they want," Correa said.

Marge Shillington of Newport Beach came to the Garibay home Thursday, telling Simona she had a grandson in the Marine Corps and for Simona to please call her if there is anything she can do. Simona nodded, understanding few of Shillington's words in English but nonetheless comprehending, one mother to another.

"It's something everyone should do," Shillington said of why she went to the home of someone she never met.

Simona wore a red, white and blue "USA" button as she received and clearly took comfort from the visitors. "I'm surprised that my son is important to them, too," she said. Hearing the Garibay family initially wanted to bury Jose in Orange County, Bonnie Wyatt of Huntington Beach offered a burial plot her family has held for more than 30 years at Forest Lawn in Cypress.

"He gave everything for his country, and we are freer because of men like him," said Wyatt, 55, as she fought off tears. "We need to give our (service) men and women everything we can, and we have to help every way we can. With a little bit of love from a whole lot of people, maybe it will help his mother get through this." He will be buried in Riverside.

Sam Romero, a downtown Santa Ana businessman, will meet with other merchants today who are organizing an annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and ask them to consider honoring Garibay at the event. "He's an immigrant, a noncitizen who gave his life," Romero said. "It's not only Jose. Any time you hear of a young man killed, you feel for him and for the family, and being that he's a local, it hit me even harder."

A giant condolence card sits in the lobby of El Pollo Loco's Irvine corporate headquarters for employees to sign. The company plans to send it to the Garibays early next week along with gift certificates for its restaurants.

"This is a local boy from our community, and we wanted to do something to extend our sympathy," said spokeswoman Julie Weeks. "He is so close to where we live and work that we wanted to be able to convey in some small way our compassion for what his family is experiencing."

About 39 third-graders from two Santa Ana Unified School District classes made condolence cards to Simona Garibay on Thursday, teacher Jill Brimmer said.

"Yo lamento," wrote one student. It means, "I lament."

Brimmer said she would hand deliver the cards. Ada Jackson of Costa Mesa baked a spice cake filled with cream cheese for the Garibay family. She planned to deliver it today, along with a pot of menudo and a salad. "If he was willing to die for millions of people, the least I can do is take his family some food and do what I can to make them happy," she said. "In times like these, Americans need to stick together."

Anne Ima lives in the neighborhood and came with a card. "The war really hits home when someone in your back yard dies," she said.

As did everyone else, she left in tears.

War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Almost 2,100 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and want you know that everyone here at Project Compassion does and will always CARE.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.

I am deeply grieved to hear of Cpl. Jose A. Garibay's passing. I did not have the privilege or the luxury of knowing him, but I want to join his family and friends in honoring him and keeping his memory alive. I believe that our soldiers are the sons and daughters of all Americans. I am committed to praying each day for all of his family and friends as each of you continues to move forward with your lives. I know that he is in a better place now, a place with no more war, hatred or death. And we can all look forward to that time when we join him there in our due time. May God bless each of you. Jose, thank you for your greatest of all sacrifices. You will never be forgotten. Now rest in peace, son.

Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

Dear Senora Garibay: We are so sorry that your son Jose Angel died on the battlefield in Iraq. We’re sure that any words of ours which attempt to comfort you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming, would not be worthy. We cannot help but to tell you, however, that your son has our eternal thanks for the sacrifice he made to keep our family, and millions of other families safe from the oppression and wickedness of our enemies. We pray that our Heavenly Father may relieve you of the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

TO THE FAMILY OF JOSE ANGEL GARIBAY

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of Jose. He was a very courageous man. He fought for the country he loved. But he also fought for what this country stood for and to free others who could not fight back. I know that you will miss him deeply and may time and the memories you have help you through this difficult period. My prayers and the prayers of millions of people throughout the world are with you. I know that there are wonderful stories about Jose that will always bring a smile to your face.

God Bless you and remember that he is safe in God's arms.

On behalf of my entire family (the Mendez, Velasquez & Mendiaz families), we wish to send our heartfelt condolences to the Garibay family. Like many Latino families, we are extremely tight knit and our hearts break in knowing that you have lost your son. What a wonderful young man he was, and it is our loss that we did not know him personally. But, we will remember Jose as an honorable Marine from our very own Orange County that died so that others may be free. We wish God's comfort and strength for you in the days ahead.

To The Garibay Family,

When I heard the life story about Jose, I was very touched. I'm glad that he was made an horonable member of the Costa Mesa Police Dept. Being an officer myself, we have all lost a brother. I trust that Jose will look out for all his sister's and brother's who work within law enforcement. God Bless.
