Sydney Shue Obituary

Shue, Sydney Lowe, 78, of Huntington Beach, California passed on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, peacefully at home. Sid was born July 13, 1932, in Los Angeles, California, the son of Tin Hop Shue and Susie Waijon Yuan. After the sudden death of his father and the serious illness of his mother in 1940, he grew up, along with his brother, at the Spanish American Institute (SAI), a Methodist School for boys in Gardena, California. He graduated from the Junior High school there in 1947 and later returned as a member of the staff. He graduated from Gardena High School in 1950 and from Pepperdine University in 1955. He attended Pepperdine on a 4-year football scholarship and played under Coach John Scolinas, was the first Chinese-American football player in a 4-year university, was a member of Beta Tau Delta Fraternity, and later returned to coach at the University. He began his teaching career shortly after college at Peary Junior High School in Gardena where he met his wife of 48 years, Barbara Cederquist of Jamestown, N.Y. They were married on December 16, 1961. He continued teaching mathematics and coaching at Magnolia High School (Anaheim Union High School District) when it opened in 1961, and continued to substitute teach there following his retirement in June 1999. During his career at Magnolia High, he coached football, wrestling, basketball, baseball, boys/girls tennis, and was a sponsor for the Asian Club. Throughout his successful career as a football coach, Sid helped to bring Magnolia High 4 League Championships in the first 5 years of the school's history, specifically, 1962, 1963, 1965, and with an undefeated team in 1966. He also coached football at SAI, Cal Poly Pomona, Newport Harbor High (including a Sunset League Championship there in 1973), Santa Ana College, and Cypress Junior College. Additionally, Sid was a supervisor for Sunkist at Disneyland for many years. He also began teaching night classes in 1979 and later Saturday Adult Education classes at Cypress JC until August 2010. Sid's favorite pastimes were spending time with his family (movies with the grandchildren!), "working out", cooking, and traveling (cruising) the world with his wife, Barbara. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Wendy Shue (Dean) Doke of Westminster, CA and Kelly Shue (Luis) Vazquez of Huntington Beach, CA; four grandchildren, Camryn Sydney Doke, Michael David Doke, Anthony Luis Vazquez, and Natalie Diane Vazquez, a sister, Bernice Jeung of San Francisco, CA, and brother/sister-in law, Gilbert Shue/Eva Chan Shue of Ontario, CA, a sister-in-law, Muriel Cederquist Jackson of Jamestown, NY, and 8 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister/brother-in-law, Georgia Yuen/Varney Yuen of Concord, CA and a brother-in-law, Albert Jeung of San Francisco, CA. A memorial service will be held in the Magnolia High School gym (2450 W. Ball Road, Anaheim) on Saturday, October 23, 2010, at 10am. A Sydney Shue Memorial Scholarship Fund is being established at Cypress Junior College or memorial donations in Sid's memory may be made to a charity of one's choosing.

So sad to hear of this now. Mr. Shue was my math teacher in 1973. I even got the honorary "swat" because he never needed to before. Ha ha. Yes, that was the boat oar paddle he carried with him.! I am sure that was eliminated soon after that time as things have changed, eh? Was a pleasure knowing him and learning much as well. Forever good memories for sure. See ya again some day coach.!!!

I had Shue for math back in the day at MHS...he was a no-nonsense, straight up, give it to you without any fluff type of person...the type of person that we seem to have less of these days. Never unfair, always true, funny, and respectful of what was right. He was one of the few teachers at my school I absolutely respected.

Sorrow is a tribute to a life that touched others deeply. Teacher and Coach, what a beautiful person. He brought so many smiles and laughter to everyone, especially when we brought him chocolate cookies. How proud his family must be to have shared their lives with him and everyone else just to have known him. Coach Shue was truly a remarkable man and everyone will greatly miss him!!

I will always miss Syd. He was such an inspiration to all of us gym rats. It was more than just his passion for fitness, who he was as a person stood out and how he related to everyone at the gym. He had a strong presence, was warm and friendly. I have many memories that will stay with me forever. I really can't put it into words. He shared his life with us and it was a privilege to know someone like him. He was amazing -- I used to tell people he was fitter than anyone on campus. So many people share your sadness == he will never be forgotten. My prayers and sympathy to his family.

Mr. Shue, you always had a smile on your face and always made me smile. Although I never had the pleasure of having you as a teacher, I remember how much you loved it when my sisters and I would bring you sushi, egg rolls, and Hawaiian food. We will miss you!!

You were my lifesaver many years ago when I was struggling with my last class at Cypress. Your patience and unique way of teaching allowed me to graduate. Coach, You taught your kids a lot more than just reading an offense on a football field, or solving a particularly tricky math equation in class at Magnolia. Some of our classroom discussions on life got pretty deep, back in 1967-68. Did you know that some of your philosophy found its way out into the "Cold War"??? Far out into the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, on a nuclear fast-attack submarine, playing some pretty nasty 'football.' Remember the CIF game against Bishop Montgomery in the cold rain, when we couldn't pass and they out-weighed our team by 20# per man? Something like that. You were there, on that submarine. A long, nasty game that "Cold War." But we won!!! Thanx, Coach.

Each week Syd would stop by our Cypress SCE Office to fill his coffee cup and visit a while. We very much enjoyed his visits and will miss our conversations with Syd. He was quite a character and many times would come in, get us all riled up and then leave us to deal with the aftermath. It was an honor to know the multi-faceted man and to be part of his life... his very full life!

Of the thousands of people one meets in the course of one's life, very few are truly memorable. Mr. Shue was one of those unique individuals. What a legacy, indeed. (MHS '76)

In attending the memorial service at Magnolia I saw that ALL people, across the entire career and life of Caoch Shu had the same experiences, the same memories. That smile, that Board of Education, that looking for the best in people , and making that best even better. Even though we made the very paddles in wood shop that Caoch Shu would swat us with. As my friend Marty Harris says, Coach Shu is the primary example of bringing back corporal punishment. I see no complaints here from those who were swatted. Only pride in having known this man and appreciation for what he showed us all about life.
I see in these messages that people signed on from the very beginning of Coach's career, and that would be Peary Jr High, which is where I am from.
I was at bat at Thornburg Park back in 1956. I wasn't even at Peary yet and Coach Shu was umping at home plate. "Bobby, I'm gonna get you in school this year". I will never forget this man.It was an honor to be around him, and Saturday I got to hear many people speak of how they had passed on what he had taught them.
Now Coach Wooden has someone to talk values with up in heaven. My prayers to the family.

Coach Shue, your old pal Brian Theriot here Newport Harbor baby, 1973 1974 Sunset League Champs under you and Coach Lent in 73. I sure wanted to speak at your gig, remember JUNK DRILLS you would run us for an hour and I would mimic in the back your way of addressing coach Lent "Hey Don"..it would drive you ballistic cuz no one would tell you who was doing it. I love you coach. Magnolia was certainly your sweetheart but I bet your love of life was our immense years together at Newport Harbor. You are so special. How about the time you caught me finally, back then no water breaks in football, and each day I would hide gatorade behind the equipment shed and feign that I had to relieve myself..you came storming around the corner one day and yelled "got you now theriot". China Wall the famous defense you invented goal line. Coach I have used China Wall defense in basketball, football, roller hockey to thousands of kids...China wall because of you is infamous. "Mushy" Bill Mockett your favorite linebacker was with me at your gig. Love you coach. Givem hell up there. All of your training methods I employed to tour the world in track and field and IS the most significant factor in my son Trevor Moose Theriot being a UCLA star in football. All because of you coach. JUNK DRILLS, probably the most painful experience I have ever endured in sports. Love you.

Uncle Sid was a GREAT MAN in every sense of the phrase. I was very moved today. While I have my own cherished childhood memories of him, to be in the Magnolia HS gym today with several hundred others whose lives he touched deeply ... well, it was inspiring. He left behind a deep and wide swath of good in our community and his family. His is an enduring legacy of good in thousands of hearts. Can a man live better than that?

Kathy & Tim Bornscheuer

October 23, 2010

There are very few people that one would meet in a lifetime that are truly iconic; Sid Shue is one of those people. We met Sid at Cypress College's gym about 8 years ago and have worked out with him 3 times a week ever since. We heard each week about his family, his grandchildren and babysitting, his upgrades to his house and all about his cruises. Oh and I can't forget about his cooking - oh how he loved to cook. I don't ever remember Sid in a bad mood, he always had a smile on his face and talked to everyone.
I still think he'll walk through that gym door - its so hard to believe he won't be walking in and greeting us with his "Hi Sweetie, Hi Timmy" and talking to us about his day.
We should all learn from him on how to live life and what's important - family, friends, to love, to laugh.
Our condolenance goes out to his family, we can tell you he was loved by everyone.
We are better people because of him and he will be greatly missed. RIP Sid - We love you.

Sid made the BEST wontons! At a recent potluck, I ate at least a dozen and weighed in at my all-time highest weight the next day. I had vowed to cut down to 6 (well, maybe 9) the next time. Who is going to talk to us about high school and college football every weekend? We never saw him "down" and still can't believe he's not with us anymore. Love to his family.

I am sorry to say I never had Mr Shue as a teacher or coach, but he was someone I was well aware of. The first time I saw, or was made aware of him, is when I noticed a tall intimidating teacher walking down the hallway with a wide smile on his face. I was proudly told by an upper classman "That's Coach Shue and he is the man with the Board of Education and used it on me." Watching Coach Shue throughout the years with students, it was easy to see he was not just well respected but deeply loved. My prayers go out to his family. Rest in peace Coach and thank you for all your goodness that you spread upon us all. Magnolia High, Class of 69

A heartfelt thanks to everyone who has shared their memories of my uncle! I was going through some photos and found one of him and my father when they were young men. For those of you who knew Sid after he shaved his head, you are in for a treat--he's the big guy on the right with a FULL HEAD OF HAIR! Thanks for everything, Uncle--you're still spreading smiles here!

We have had 2 weeks to reflect on our loss of Sid. We are still waiting for him to walk through the door in the Continuing Education Office at Cypress before heading over to the Gym. It brings a smile to our faces to think about him. I personally am thankful I had the opportunity to get to know him and work with him. He was one of a kind. My prayers are with family and friends who are experiencing this huge void and missing that incredible smile.

Mr. Shue was my Favorite Teacher, in my Least Favorite Subject! As much as I hated MATH, he made it less intimidating and FUN! I remember a lot of laughs, jokes, and burrito-talk. I think I learned a few things about math, too.

October 19, 2010

I was saddened by the news of Mr. Shue who has always had a place in my heart and always will. I have so many fond memories from high school...home-made chocolate chip cookies, home-made raviolis(he actually came to my house to help my mom) him asking Dave who he was going to take to the Homecoming Dance, coming to our wedding. When Dave and I decided to move to Northern California 16 years ago, we went to Magnolia High to see him before we left. I can still see his contagious smile while waving good-bye to us and that is how I will remember Mr.Shue!

Of course Mr. Shue was a great teacher, coach, and mentor. But to me he was like a cool Uncle. He took me to my first McDonalds, gave me rides in his Austin-Healy, and chaperoned our beach parties. That was the only way the girls were allowed to go. Thinking of you always brings a smile to my face. Peary Jr High 57-59.

Mr. Shue had a way of making students feel like they were in his class for a reason; not just to learn math, but to learn life. He was always there with an encouraging word, especially for us numerophobics. I can't think of anyone who didn't benefit from his Board of Education, come on guys, admit it!! We are all better people because of Mr. Shue.

I had Mr Shue for math in 10th grade. It was so much fun and I even learn things other than math. He introduced me to the Paddle 16 times one day(for my birthday) at the joy of other students. I will never forget his smile. How could anyone not smile back. I still remember him saying "Run Animal Run" "And don't come back with out a burrito" Thank You Mr Shue for the great times. I had Syd for math, twice, at Magnolia, in my junior and senior years in the late sixties. For the prom, he and his wife hosted a 'cut-rate-restaurant' for dinner at their home and charged us $10 per couple. We would have spent $80 dollars, at least, at anyplace in Anaheim. And remember, this was 1968. I last saw him at our 40-year reunion. I took his picture and he flashed that 100-watt smile. I will see you again, Mr. Shue. But not yet. Not just yet. ;)

Mr Shue from Peary????? I loved that man. I had him for math in 8th grade, but he doubled as a PE teacher. I used to bake cakes for him and he would take them and share with the other teachers. I'm so sad to hear that he passed... :(

October 13, 2010

Though I did not have Mr. Shue for any classes, I remember him and his million-dollar smile as if it was yesterday I was a student at Peary. I did have Mrs. Shue for a home ec class in ninth grade. What a wonderful legacy he leaves us -- to make a positive contribution to the world, and to be remembered by so many with great affection.

Jody ne Cutright

October 13, 2010

Mr. Shue gave me confidence in math that I never had before by giving me confidence in myself. He was a rare teacher who judged me by my own progress, not in comparison to other students. I've passed that gift on to my own children -- do better than you have before and you'll succeed. Thanks, Mr. Shue.

October 13, 2010

Mr. Shue was a no-nonsense kind of guy. You could always know what was coming your way because he didn't hide anything from his students.

Yet at the same time he was very funny and warm. He knew when to be stern and when to be a friend. RIP

October 13, 2010

Whenever I think of my high school days at Magnolia, I always have many fond and funny memories of Mr. Shue. Now after teaching for 33 years, I realize why he almost always had a smile on his face. His job was more than just teaching content in the class room but imparting life lessons to the students. My sympathy to the Shue family. Thank you for sharing him with all of us kids.

That smile hasn't changed in the nearly 50 years since I last saw it. I was lucky enough to have Mr. Shue several times in my 3 years at Peary Jr. High, both as a P.E. At your retirment, different generations of students, mostly football players, whose lives you guided and molded, gathered to celebrate your legacy. You forged physical and mental toughness in a generation of high school football players. You created a reputation for younger brothers to live up to. At your retirement, a circle of former '60's championship football players circled you as if they were ganging up on you, only to present you with a signed football and a group hug of appreciation. I'll always remember you as funny, engaging, sometimes intimidating but always showing care for us kids. At your retirement we heard the hilarious stories repeated: "No homework? You bring me shoclit ship cookies or you got swat!" (That was with an oar, not a paddle, with a hole in it -- definitely one way of reaching out to the selected few of us) And all was said with your huge signature wide, toothy grin. "Hey, Frank. Get me a burrito. You get caught -- I don't know you." Our family (that's seven of us--"Not another Frank!") still tell Mr. Shue stories to our kids. Truly an Icon for Magnolia. I miss you as do so many generations from the 'hood whose lives you helped to shape. All my thoughts of appreciation, gratitude, and condolences to your family.

Mr. Shue was a very special teacher, and a great human being. Man that big smile of his. I'll never forget it or him. He was my Jr Hi home room teacher for 3 years. It was always interesting. Learned a great deal about life each day from Mr.Shue. His nickname for me was "Little Caesar"-- maybe I earned that name. At Peary he had the respect of all the students and the entire staff. In fact, he was a bit of an enforcer---kept the guys in line. He inspired me in many ways, and is one of the main reasons I became an educator. I think Luther Petty has his orignal mahogany paddle.
Thanks Mr. Shue. To this day, I can't call him Syd.

I went to Magnolia High School and had the previlage and honor of knowing Mr. Shue as a football and wrestling coach. He was a very fine man who I respected a great deal. May our Lord Jesus Christ embrace him in his loving arms and may Jesus Christ Bless his family. All who crossed paths with Mr. Shue were blessed.

I remember Mr Shue showing up at an after school fight. The guys were fighting and didn't see him drive up in his sports car. He jumped up on the trunk behind the seat and watched with that great smile of his. When they finely noticed Mr Shue, they stopped. Then with that smile still shining he told them to go ahead and fight, but he was going to fight the winner. They left.

Mr Shue was one of the best teachers I ever had.

Uncle Syd gave me my first real job at Disneyland back in 1985. I worked at Sunkist and found out what it was like to earn an honest buck. Thanks Uncle, we'll miss you.

Many moons ago at Peary Jr. High I had Mr. Shue as my Math teacher. You were a highlight in my jr high years. It was a revelation to have a teacher who made the class laugh as well as work. I believe it was the first time I realized that teachers could be friendly, funny and still teach. Thanks for the great memories.

You always treated me special, giving me passes and dancing with me at the dances at Jr High, but most of all you inspired me by teaching me advanced math classes which I continued onto High School and College. I just got your phone number from a classmate and due to my procastination did not get to talk to you. You are in my prayer, my favorite teacher, I miss you and thanks for all you taught me and all the others!!

You were my all time favorite teacher. Class was always fun and we learned. I have thought of you often over the years and often wished I knew how to get hold of you and thank you for being "you".
