Robert Cluggish Obituary

CLUGGISH, ROBERT M. Born September 18, 1917 in Kentucky, came to Orlando with his wife Patricia, to share his knowledge of sports with the young men at Howard
Middle School, after playing professional basketball with the first teams of the New York Knickerbockers. He was one of the first "big men", being 6'10", in the 1940's NBA. He also played football and basketball at the University of Kentucky where he was actively recruited by Coach Adolf Rupp. After decades of teaching, coaching and winning at Howard, he retired and the gymnasium at the school was named in his honor. On September 5th of this year, he succumbed to a sudden cardiac event and went to be reunited with his parents, brother Stan and wife Pat. He is survived by his elder sister, Sarah Martin, niece Dr. Julie Martin and ex-wife and caregiver, Iris.

i went to Howard Jr High in the 60's and of all the teachers i had Coach Cluggish was one that stood out. He was a gentle giant and will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Can only have very fond memories of Coach Cluggish as I played footbal under him at Lakeview High School in Winter Garden. It was like just yesterday that I saw him drive up in his Mercury convertible to the football field. Step out of it and saw how much of a giant he was. That was his personality with us on the football field. Well liked and respected. I can not remember of any unkind words coming from him about his players. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Donald Griffith, Palm Beach Gardens, FL

A gentile giant that was a friend to everyone. He was a positive influence on the formative years of his students. He made a good lasting impression on all of the people he worked with..

Bob will be sadly missed by the Howard Community and the hundreds of kids he coached through his many years at Howard. Truly a man of remarkable class and integrity. Bruce Broer
