1935 - 2016
After a short illness, Anthony Lionel (Tony) Halliday on January 4, 2016 with family by his side. Beloved husband of Philippa (Pippa). Father of Caroline Waters (Robert), Suzanne Lewis (Michael) and Philip (Evelyn). Loving grandfather of Ryan (Megan), Brittany (Andrew), Amanda, Madeleine, Brennan, Charlotte, Catherine, Christopher and Colin. Tony was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1935 and grew up in Salisbury, Rhodesia. He obtained his BA at Oxford University and returned to Salisbury in 1958 to work for the Government of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. He married Pippa in 1959 and in 1962 moved his growing family to Geneva, Switzerland where he joined the secretariat of the GATT. In 1968 the family moved to Ottawa where Tony worked at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Commerce on international wheat issues, and later on multilateral and bilateral trade relations. In 1976 he was appointed Minister Counselor Commercial at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Returning to Ottawa in 1979, Tony held senior positions in the bilateral relations field. In 1986 he was appointed Consul General in Chicago. He retired from Government in 1991. For Tony this signalled the emergence of a second career as a consultant on international trade issues to a range of governments: Russia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Mauritius, and the Caribbean region. He enjoyed the travel and the opportunities it offered to enlarge his "life list" of bird species. Until the onset of his illness, Tony was a keen golfer, and spent time working on African issues. He and Pippa enjoyed their extensive travels together, and being with family and friends. Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of Tony's life at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave., Ottawa, on Sunday, January 10, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to Hospice Care Ottawa or to The Salvation Army would be much appreciated by the family.
