TERRY COOK Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from May 16 to May 17, 2014.
COOK, Terry
June 6, 1947 - May 12, 2014
Friend to all, mentor to many, author, editor, impassioned correspondent, advocate of just causes, co-dog-walker of Clifford the big white doodle, smartest guy in the room.
Terry was a world-renowned intellectual in the field of archival studies, whose ideas transformed archives from being perceived merely as storehouses of old records to sites of national memory worthy of scholarly attention. As Verne Harris, Director, Research and Archive, at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in South Africa, recently wrote, Terry was "pre-eminently amongst the giants of current archival discourses". After more than two decades with the National Archives of Canada, he accepted a post as Associate and Visiting Professor in the Archival Studies Program at the University of Manitoba in 2000. In 2010, Terry was elected to the Royal Society of Canada, the highest distinction that one can receive as a scholar in Canada; he was the first person to be elected to the RSC for scholarship in the field of archival studies.
Terry was a great collector – of books, glassware, fine art, and kitschy knickknacks from around the world. Otherwise, Terry broke every aspect of the stereotype of an archivist and serious intellectual figure. He never grew out of his love for playing friendly pranks, driving motorcycles, swilling Coca Cola, and, above all, enjoying rock music. His love for and encyclopedic knowledge of all things rock and roll was legendary. He was a lifelong fan of 'The King' (Elvis) - who he joked (we think) lived on after his 'disappearance'. His music collection, numbering in the thousands of singles, albums, and CDs, covered seven decades of rock music and educated several generations of kids on Hubbard Crescent.
Terry was the much-loved partner for 45 years of Sharon Anne Cook, and the adored father of Tim (Sarah) and Graham. There was nothing he was more proud of than his two accomplished, kind and generous sons. He was known as the "Chief Troll" at Manor Park School playground by his triumvirate of perfect grandgirlies: Chloe (rule-maker), Emma (rule modifier) and Paige (First Assistant Troll). Having lost his parents and brother early in life, Sharon's family became his own. He was always grateful to have been so fully embraced by the Killins clan. Terry was skilled in the art of tickling dogs, and delighted in leading the much-beloved first family dog - who was named after George R. Parkin, the subject of Terry's very serious doctoral thesis - in howling sessions after dinner. Terry was just as playful with and close to the second family dog, Clifford, who was with Terry to the end.
Terry was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. Many friends, neighbours, colleagues, and family have loyally walked with Terry through this final life passage. There are too many to name individually, but collectively their friendship, strength, and good cheer helped Terry and his family along this long and difficult road. The family wishes especially to thank Dr. Zhu and the dedicated staff of 5 East at the Ottawa General Hospital.
Visitation on Sunday, May 18, at 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m., and Memorial Service on Monday, May 19, at 2 p.m., at Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod St, Ottawa. Donations can be made to the Ottawa Humane Society.

Dear Sharon,
Words cannot do much - but you and your family are in my thoughts. There's no lack of courage, wisdom, and strength in the Cook family and I have faith that Terry's legacy lives on.

I read of Terry's death in the weekend Citizen. Cancer is a thief stealing loved ones with no respect for age or respect of the victim's contribution during their life. It leaves behind heartbreak only for family and friends who must carry on. My sympathy to you all.

Terry has certainly left the building! Sadness is appropriate but I have many fond memories of my visit to your house in Ottawa in the 1990s and your sabbatical later in Canberra and other encounters with Terry. Great guy. Condolences to you Sharon and the family

Dear Sharon and family, our deepest sympathies on the loss of Terry. I very much looked up to him as the older, wiser and larger cousin. He was clearly blazing the trail for the rest of us. I can attest to his love of rock and roll and was always in awe of his amazing record collection, even as far back as the 60's. I am sorry we hadn't kept in touch over the years.

Sharon, I am so sad. When I look at his picture I am reminded of my dad (Allan Cook)and two brothers(Ted and Kent Cook). He seems to me like a mix of all three. I wish I could have know him better. I love our Cook heritage and would love to connect with you and your children. My heart hurts for you and your family. Janis Cook Klingman

Dear Sharon, Tim and Graham,
Just a note to express Linda and my condolences for the loss of Terry.
We were, to say the least, both shocked since we had not heard of Terry's illness. We spent the Winter in Bradenton, Florida out of reach of any Canadian news.
The Memorial Service in Terry's honour was splendid in every way imaginable. A excellent range of speakers dealt with all aspects of Terry's life, one lived to the very fullest, and filled many blank pages for those of us who only knew Terry's professional life.
Terry will be sorely missed by family, friends & colleagues in and outside the Archival world.
Please accept our warmest condolences and rest assured that Terry will be in our memories for a long time to come.

Sincerely,

May 19, 2014

My sympathies Sharon to you and your family. I have known Terry since 2000 when he first arrived in Winnipeg to teach Archival studies. He came in with Tom of course. Laura and I worked in the general office so we saw them regularly. I could not help but notice his cheerful outlook and his beautiful smiling eyes. I called him my teddybear because of his size and the warm hugs he gave after not seeing us for a few months. He was the most kind gentle person (along with Tom since they were joined at the hip). The archival world has lost a great scholar but most importantly a wonderful man.

My deepest sympathies,
Shirley Bibeau

Well, Terry it is now left to me to write about Aristotle and Archives...but we sure had fun talking about it. To the Cook Family, your Terry touched so many, and will be deeply missed.
