"After the Party" - Joe and June Cassey, Phil and Martha Villeneuve
Philippe Villeneuve (Jr)
April 4, 2012
I grew up knowing Joe and June as very close and dear friends to my parents for almost 50 years. I fondly remember the house boat rides at lac St-Pierre, spending time in their cottage and in their home in Ottawa and witnessing "wild and crazy" parties that were second to none. I will always remember Joe as a warm, gentle and compassionate man who took a genuine interest in everyone he met.

Sad news to hear of the passing of Joe.
I have fond memories of both Joe and June when I was a young teenager and visited them with my father Bill Stepchuk usually at a party at either their house or ours, or over eggs and coffee on a Sunday morning at the Party Palace on Elgin street. I, like many others, was drawn to Joe's compassionate nature and approachability. He was a good friend to my Dad.
My sincere condolences to June and their family.

Joe taught us everything we knew about campaigns and business. One of my best campaign memories was Kids for Cassey, the bikes that followed for their hard work, and the continuing warm relationship with a father figure. Joe taught us how to sell bockwurst at the Ex - it seemed so exotic then. As a Centretowner, one knew there was a strong voice at City Hall - but more than that - someone with the imagination to solve problems. Food is a dominant theme in our memories - not only his own wonderful dinners but that magical place once known as Billy's. Finally, we remember a special backyard party with a popcorn machine and Bobby Curtola. We brought a friend from Halifax who asked if parties were always like this in Ottawa. Sure, we lied. June - our deepest sympathies. Joe will always live in our hearts, as will you.

June.....
My deepest sympathies.
I have always remembered my visits to Aunt June and Uncle Joe's cottage with cousins Ted and Judy. Joe was there but we were playing, swimming and sitting on the deck pretty much oblivious to everything other than our next adventure. I always loved his relaxed demeanure.

Fond memories in the 70's of working with Joe in political campaigns and his first campaign for alderman. Wonderful food and friendship both at home and the cottage. I am so very sorry June for this loss. Fond love to you and other family members.

It was a great pleasure to meet Joe and hear firsthand his accounts of the early days of the community association and working for the community at City Hall. Even when I visited him in hospital just a month ago, he still knew all the current files and asked me for updates on each one. Thank you, Joe, for all that you've done for us.

Joe, you will be so missed, especially by your best friend and darling, June. The last several years, my husband and I have had the pleasure of helping Joe and June out at Halloween giving out candies to the kids, and Bailey's and coffee to the adults. (It was a very popular home.) Joe always cooked a wonderful meal, served in hollowed-out pumpkins! The first time I saw Joe at Halloween, he was dressed in a Zorro outfit... The look of him made me weak-kneed! Tall, dark, and definitely handsome! You will be fondly remembered, Joe.

June: Deborah and I want to express our sympathies and condolences with you on Joe's passing. We had as your know the opportunity to work together on a number of things--sometimes on Political opposite sides--but always for the betterment of our community. His dedicated interest and efforts for our City and especially the C.C.E.A (Super Ex) will be truly remembered. My prayers are with you at this vey difficult time.

Joe was a great friend of Centretown and played a key role in the ever memorable, dynamic and productive "good old days". He helped shape a community we are still very proud of. I always appreciated the help and encouragement he gave in my endeavors.

June
I have so many memories of Joe.
We first met when a friend was starting a small business in Capital ward. Joe was extremely helpful in sorting out City of Ottawa protocol.
At SuperEx he had many innovative ideas.
YMCA Volunteers looked forward to his jokes.
Joe was always there to help others.

Joe always had room for friends (young & old) no matter what time it was. I am a daughter of one of his many friends, and I am a witness to many lively parties. He had the knack to make hosting seem so simple. He always had time to talk: he was especially fond of young people, that brought him fresh ideas that he would nurture.

I had the pleasure of working with Joe in many political campaigns in the 1970s. His quick wit and joy in life made him a delight to be around. My condolences to June and to Joe's family and friends.

Joe was a generous host at home and at the cottage. In the summers he would be sitting on the deck studying City Hall documents. June and the gang would be on the dock taking in the sun. From time to time Joe would appear with a full blender of fresh fruit daqueries to keep us hydrated. And then he served a fabulous meal. There was laughter and sharing and sound advice if asked. Thanks
