Richard GUMSON Obituary

GUMSON, Richard P.

(August 23, 1934 -

August 28, 2014) (80 years)

Richard P. Gumson, of Jupiter, FL, passed away on August 28, 2014 at Jupiter Medical Center's Hospice Pavilion after an extraordinarily long and courageous battle with cancer and a myriad of health issues. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Herman and Marion Gumowitz; attended Tilden High School, Brooklyn College (the first in his family to attend college) and Brooklyn Law School, and embarked on a 50 plus year law career, first in Manhattan, then in Miami as General Counsel to Black Angus Restaurants (1972-1975), Hollywood (1975-1987) and Jupiter, FL (1988-2007), where he founded Jupiter LAW Center and embraced the concept of being a neighborhood lawyer and working with his family (wife Sandy as Administrator and Bookkeeper, son Adam as his law partner and daughter-in-law Lissa

as one of the paralegals). He loved the law and solving people's problems, had no qualms about telling

a client what he thought (even if it wasn't what the client wanted to hear or the way the client wanted

to hear it) and had an uncanny ability to always do the right thing. Richard had a larger than life personality, charming and irascible at the same time, wordly, optimistic, with an innate sense of fairness, full of integrity, gritty and a lifelong lover of all things food. He was a grand storyteller who could double the length of any story with details that didn't matter but often lead to another story. A lifelong movie buff, he raised his kids on Mel Brooks' movies, Airplane and The Godfather and quoted lines verbatim from them and a host of other movies regularly. Although the Brooklyn Dodgers broke his heart and his love of baseball when they relocated from Brooklyn, in later life his passion was rekindled by rooting for Duke and University of Florida basketball and the Miami Heat.

He celebrated his 80TH Birthday on August 23, 2014 surrounded by his entire family and tons of food - his perfect ending to a wonderful life. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Marion Gumowitz, and his wife of nearly 50 years, Sandy Gumson; he is survived by his three children, Adam (Lissa) Gumson of Jupiter, FL; Jodi (Michael) Burger of Yorktown Heights, NY; and Jamie Gumson of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; his 5 grandchildren, Ava, Lilly and Zane Gumson and Devin and Simone Burger.
