I am still finding it hard to believe that Don is gone. I am a t a loss for words to think that someone so alive is gone far too soon!! We feel deeply for you, his family, and pray that the Lord will hold you in the comfort of his love.

I agree with all these beautiful comments but needed to write a poem in honor of the poet Donald Layfield:

Living the Life of Layfield

He came west from PA, they say.
With his parents for a long stay.
in California's Southern Part.
A place where the Citrus start.
With desire and strong will he showed at Mt Rubidoux.
Where chemistry caught his fancy and a laboratory he would know.
Don accomplished more than that though, we know.
He found love, family, and would always show
That he was soft in the heart.
Of course, all this after he blustered his art.
Of sarcasm, wit, and finding the right part.
For his cars, and other things for which he never could part.
And we're lucky to be one of those blessed pieces
Of Don's life he shared. And we will
Of course, store our memories.
Like Don taught us to.
We will miss your stories and quips
Bless you for making us laugh and get through the dips.
In life.

Don will be greatly missed by us. His faithful telephone calls to us biweekly were treasured. Great time spent with him last year when he visited us. His intelligence, wit, laughter and so much more we could say. We loved him and will sorely miss his gentle voice.....and, also his planned trip back to visit with us next year. God bless you, dear family of Don's ~~
Love,
Paul & Keretta Bruner
(cousins, once removed...
as Don corrected us!!)

Likely, Don never knew he was leaving us. We knew him well, and he liked recognition, appreciation. He had it all along, and especially now. Miss him.

Don was a co-worker and friend for over 20 years. He taught me a lot about chemistry and was always on hand and willing to help me when I asked. We shared many good times as well as common miseries at USSL. His sense of humor brightened our days considerable. I will miss him. My sympathy and prayers are with his family and loved ones in this time of grief and sorrow. May God bless you all.

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never, ever the same.

Dear Family,
Sorry for your loss,
though I had only known Don for just over 1 year. It was always a pleasure speaking with him; he was full of knowledge and wisdom. He made our work place very special.
Don was still making new friends and He will be missed.

With sympathy,
~
