Edward Cantow Obituary

Edward Francis Cantow MD
Charlottesville - Our father, Edward F. Cantow, MD., has gone to his favorite trout stream in Heaven. He was "caught" on January 17, 1936, and "released" on March 22, 2012. Ed was born in Baltimore, MD and after the age of 12 grew up in New York. He earned an undergraduate degree from Manhattan College and a medical degree from Georgetown University. Ed began his career as a physician in the Navy prior to opening a private practice in Portsmouth, VA. He was an amazing hematologist and oncologist who helped start the first hospice in the Portsmouth area. He was a wonderful husband to Theresa S. Cantow, who was the love of his life. They are now together again. He was the best father anyone could possibly have to Christine, Loretta, Claire, Diana and Edward. Together with our mom they raised us to always live life to the fullest, to find the best in every day, even the darkest, to celebrate life, to appreciate and respect nature, to love people. Those are the most precious gifts we could ever be given. Ed was also an avid fly fisherman who loved the outdoors. In addition to his five children and five in-law children, Ed is survived by his brother Bob Cantow and his twelve grandchildren, Anthony C., David, Christopher, Danielle, Nick, Fiona, Anthony G., Alex, Angela, Andrew, Adam and Dominic. A Memorial Service will be held on March 27, 2012, 2:00 PM at Shepherd of the Hills in Quinque,VA. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider making a memorial donation to support cancer research through the UVA Health Foundation, PO Box 800773, Charlottesville, VA 22908. Or donations may be made to Community Hospices of America Foundation (CHA). Contributions may be sent by mail to: CHA Foundation, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 180, Charlottesville, VA 22911. You may also contribute donations directly to the Community Hospices of America Foundation by visiting www.chafoundation.org/contributeonline.

I often think of you and how much I owe you. I only wish I had been able to thank you face to face. Hopefully, you knew. A wonderful doctor, and from I've learned since I was your patient, you were a wonderful person. Rest easy Dr. Cantow.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Ed for years at Portsmouth General Hospital in the Laboratory. A great mentor and fine human being who often times put his own ailments aside in lieu of his patients' problems. Thank you Dr Cantow for your inspiration to a young lab tech. Dr. Cantow was my baby sister's oncologist. He was a wonderful man and a wonderful doctor. My sympathies go out to his family, friends and loved ones. I thank him every day for my sister.

Dr. Cantow was my oncologist at the age of eleven (1973-1978) through fifteen. He was, and is, my hero. Not only was he a great doctor but he was a good man. I tried so hard to find him but never was able to. Now I have and I hope to one day see him again, to hug him, to thank him. My sympathies go out to his family, friends and loved ones. Rest in peace Dr. Cantow.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

Growing up side by side with the Cantow family gave me another family to love and to learn from. While I am sad that "Eddie" and "Terri" have left us, I am a better person to have had the privilege of having them in my life for over 40 years. To the Cantow kids, I love you all and send my warmest sympathies.
