Hildreth Strode Obituary

Hildreth Hubbard Strode

Norfolk - Strode, Hildreth (Hil) Hubbard, passed away in Norfolk, VA on December 14, 2016. Born in Lynchburg, VA on September 24, 1926 to Judge Aubrey Ellis Strode and Louisa Hubbard Strode, Hil attended E.C. Glass High School. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Swarthmore College and an MA in Administration & Economics from Princeton University. Hil married Swarthmore classmate Beth Ash in 1949, and he worked in New York State at General Electric, DoAll Eastern Company, Brookhaven National Laboratories, and Strode Computer Corp. Hil and Beth raised their family in Lloyd Harbor on Long Island, NY, and he was on the Board of Friends World College in Lloyd Harbor. Hil also was an inventor. While living on Long Island, he designed and built a floating amphibious Jeep and a 48-pound folding portable motorcycle. Following Beth Strode's death in 1996, Hil moved to Norfolk, Virginia. There he founded a work-study program, Career Start, and was active in the Rotary Club and the Salvation Army. In Norfolk, Hil built a new life when he met Lois Martin and they married in 1999. Hil is survived by his wife, Lois Strode, two children from his first marriage, Betsy and Peter Strode, and two step-children, Dorothy McCorkle and Frederick Martin. Gifts in Hil's memory may be designated for Kroc Scholarship and made to the Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Community Center in Norfolk.
