ELMWOOD - Marvin Richard "Dick" Shoop, 82, of Elmwood passed away Thursday, April 7, 2011, at LifeCare Hospital of South Texas in McAllen, Texas.
He was born Aug. 21, 1928, in Galesburg, the son of Loren and Ruth Beckner Shoop. He married Jane Ann Meehan on Sept. 23, 1950, in Corinth, Miss. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Marvin R. (Shelli) Shoop Jr. of Elmwood; two daughters, Joan Annette (Joe) Stokowski of Peoria and Brenda Sue Scharnakau of Austin, Texas; one sister, Margaret Sprecher of Yates City; three grandsons, Barry Ryan Shoop, Kevin Allen Shoop and Brandon Hoyt Scharnakau; and one granddaughter, Nicole Marie Shoop.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Edward, Donald, Robert and Dale.
He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945 to 1947 and from 1950 to 1951.
He owned and operated Elmwood Transfer from 1951 to 1980. He then worked for Lane Transfer until he retired in 1990.
He was a member of the American Legion and Loredo Taft Campers Club, formerly served as a volunteer firefighter with the Elmwood Fire Department and formerly served as a volunteer for BYE Ambulance Service.
He liked to spend winters in the Rio Grande Valley at Donna, Texas. He also enjoyed camping, gardening and fishing.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2011, at the United Methodist Church of Elmwood, with visitation beginning at 3 p.m. Pastor Mark Graham will officiate. Cremation rites have been accorded.
Memorials may be made to BYE Ambulance Service.
