JAMES W. FOX Richmond, Kentucky Formerly Gary, Indiana James Walker Fox, age 78, of Richmond, KY, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2008 after a battle with colon cancer. Jim was born on October 14, 1929 in Kearney, NE. When he was 2 years old, his family settled in Gary, IN. He graduated from Emerson High school in 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years from which he received an honorable discharge in 1955 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He attended Indiana University earning a B.A. in Political Science in 1957 and an Ed.D. in 1961. He served as a professor and administrator at the University of Akron and Kent State University and professor and Dean of Students at Madison College (now James Madison University). He received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Virginia in 1975. From 1973 until his retirement in 1997, he was a Professor of Criminal Justice at Eastern Kentucky University. Jim was dedicated to his calling as an educator. He inspired commitment in his students, many of whom went onto successful careers in law enforcement. His dedication to applied scholarship was reflected in research that he conducted under grants from the states of Kentucky and Tennessee and the U.S. Department of Justice on probation, parole and juvenile justice. He also published extensively on these topics. He took an active role in service to the college and community, including the Foster Care Board, the Governor's Task Force on Crime and the American Cancer Society. Jim is survived by his sister, Dora Borsattino; his son, Michael; his son, and daughter-in-law, James Jr. and Maria; and his five grandchildren, Kate, Emma, Nicholas, Luke and Grace. During his last months, he was cared for by Bernice Abrams of Berea, KY to whom his family is very grateful. There will be a memorial gathering on Saturday, June 21, 2008 from 10-11 a.m. at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, located at 7535 Taft Street, Merrillville, IN. Interment at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN.
