LAZO
MICHAEL "MIKE DAYE"
On April 12, 2016, after a long illness, Michael Lazo passed away at the Charles Morris Skilled Nursing facility. He was born on May 1, 1932, to the late Michael and Susan Lazo. Early in life, he discovered that he had been gifted with a wonderful and versatile singing voice. While still a boy, he sang weekly on the local KDKA Betty Dugan radio program. After graduating from Taylor Allderdice in 1949, he served in the Army and was stationed in Korea. While serving he met the late Gene Schacter with whom he went on to form The Tempos, a quartet which also included Jim Drake and Tom Monito. In 1959, The Tempos recorded "See You in September," which became a hit that summer and went on to become a 1950s classic. While the song has been recorded since by other artists, it is The Tempos' version that was chosen for the "American Graffiti" film and soundtrack album. The recording has since been included in several oldies collections. After the Tempos disbanded, Mike continued to perform throughout the Pittsburgh area under the stage name of Mike Daye. In the 1970s, he was the permanent MC for shows at the Pat McBride's Supper Club in North Hills. In the 1980s and 1990s, he became the regular MC as well as a trustee for the Duquesne Moose Lodge until its closing. He continued performing into the late 2000s until he was overcome by emphysema, which he battled for the remaining years of his life. Mike will be missed by his daughter, Ann Lazo Shapiro (Michael); his granddaughter, Alexis "Lexi" Shapiro; brother, Edward Lazo (Mary Alice); brother, Francis Lazo (Cindy); sister, Francine Evanshaw (the late Anthony); several nieces and nephews; his best buddy, his dog, Mindy; and by Shannon Shea and son, William, to whom he was "Pops." He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara (Rechichar) Lazo in 1990; and his fiancée, Joan Williams in 2010. He also was predeceased by his sister, Irene Speranza (Tony); brother, Joseph Lazo (Ruth); infant brother, Thomas Lazo; and his infant son, Michael, Jr. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Charles Morris for their support, comfort and care in the last year of Mike's life. Family and friends will be received in the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Ave., on Friday, April 15, 2016, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Saturday 11:30 a.m. with funeral mass 12 p.m. at St. Rosalia Church.

I was so saddened to learn of Mike's passing. He had truly one of the most beautiful voices of those 1950s groups, and "See You in September" was one of the most touching, most beautiful songs from that era. Although re-recorded later by other groups, and probably more successful financially, his original will remain not only the original, but the greatest version ever recorded.

May Mike, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace. Amen

My condolences to Ed and the Lazo family and friends.

Mike and I go back to our early days at Burgwin school in Hazelwood. We both sang in the musicals as little kids.

I'll "See You in September" Mike, but I hope not too soon.

Mike could always be counted on for a joke or a song. I'll miss you!
