I sadly learned today when I called Salon Vivace that Joey is no longer with us. The news of his passing was quite a shock. It's been many years since I moved from Pittsburgh, but occasionally I would still come to the salon when I had the opportunity to do so. I'd known him since his days at Joseph Hornes. Joey was a joy to know, and a blessing to my mother and me when we would both come to have our hair done by him. I will always the treasure the memories of those days and how he treated my mom with such kindness. He always made us feel special, and went the extra measure to be sure we were taken care of. My deepest condolences to all his dear family. My prayers are with you. May he rest in peace.

April 19, 2015

I cannot believe it has been one year since Joey went to be with the Angels. I still expect to see him when I walk into the salon. Rest in Peace, Joey, you earned it. Blessings to his family. Betsy Read

I met Joe when he was 18, working at horns in Greensburg. We dated briefly and I would often see him out at the clubs with his posse. He was a delightful human being. I am so sorry for your loss. I haven't seen him in years, but for some reason he popped into my mind today. It is hard to believe he is gone.

I just found out that Joey will be making heaven a happier, more beautiful place. What a bright and shining spirit! I loved that guy! He made me laugh out loud. He always gave me the biggest hug and smile when I'd come in to the salon. He helped me through my husband's passing from cancer and never gave up hope through his own fight. Rana, God bless you and your family.

Imbarlina Family,

My heartfelt condolences to you and so many of his friends, clients and coworkers. I am just hearing this news now and so sad I will not see his smiling face. He was such a positive light in so many regards and will be missed dearly. I have known him for over 20 years and I always looked forward to visiting with him and getting my hair styled. He was the only stylist in all these years that made my hair look like movie star hair with effortless perfection. He will be missed dearly and I know God will hold him and your family in the palm of his hand. God Bless you all!

Rana, Mia and Nicholas - My heart is heavy at your loss. Joey was so full of life and happiness, and he was such a bright light to so many people. He always talked about his family, and filled me in on what was happening in your lives. It was quite obvious that you were close and had a strong bond. I'm sorry. Wishing you peace.

Dear Joey's family

I remember Joey washing hair for Arnold at Hornes. I always would tease him that even though he was a big shot now, he will still always be the little Italian kid to me. Joey was humble, kind and never forget where he came from.
My husband loved him He would go with me to my appointments. Joey would greet him "Hey Paisano" and they would go on and solve all the world's problems. I will never forget when my husband passed, Joey called me. He told me to come to the McKnight shop if I needed my hair done. He wouldn't take any money just gave me a big hug and said how much he was going to miss Eugenio. I will miss him - he was like one of my kids and was always smiling and singing and telling stories. He loved you so much Rana, Mia and Nicholas and was so proud of all of you. I know me and my daughter (another of Joey's 30+ year clients)are heart broken. You will always miss him but God will take care you you and ease your pain.

Rana, Mia, and Nicholas and the entire Imbarlina Family, I am so sorry for your loss in such a wonderful, beautiful, generous, humble man. I have known Joey for 34 years - I was his first paying customer at Joseph Hornes and he often told people in his salon that when I came in. His witt, singing, jokes, tales, wisdom, smiles, and most of all his creativity in dealing with my hair will all be missed. Thank you for sharing Joey with us. I pray God comforts you all; for I know my own heart is breaking; so I can't imagine your loss. Joey, my dear, sweet friend, you will be greatly missed by many, indeed!

April 23, 2014

Dear Rana, Mia, Nicholas and family,
For 20+ years we had the honor of having Joey as a dear friend, who happened to be our hairdresser. He had the gift of making everyone feel special (and helping them look that way, too!) We will never forget his warm greeting as we entered the salon, his sense of humor, his humility, his spirituality and his all-around goodness. He was so generous and thoughtful, even offering to come to our home to do my hair after I had major surgery. He loved you all so much and fought so hard to stay with you longer, but now he is watching over you from heaven. We are devastated to think we won't see him again and know we can't comprehend the depth of your loss, but hopefully you are finding comfort in the love and prayers of family and friends. From all the notes written here, it is obvious that Joey was a once-in-a-lifetime, special person who was loved by all who knew him. There is no better tribute than that. God bless you and keep you all, and goodbye Joey, until we meet again. Thank you for everything.

Love,
Bill and Mary Anne Mistick

Although our family did not know Joey for long, we felt like he was a special friend we had known for years. When we moved to Pittsburgh this Summer, Joey was one of the first people we met. He was a great neighbor, who always went out of his way to talk to our girls, letting them know what a great town they had moved to. Joey eventually became our hair stylist, and we got to know him even better. He truly was such a positive, upbeat person that you just loved to be around. Our hearts are broken with his passing. He will be greatly missed! Jim, Candy, Kiera and Clare Loftus

I too was a 30+yr client of Joey's. I knew him before we met our spouses. You were married in August and we were married in November, 1991. He adored you all, Rana, Mia and Nicholas and was so proud of all of you. He loved fine wine, fine food and family, and not in that order. He always spoke about his family. Although I never met you, I feel that I knew you through Joe's conversations. One thing I will always remember, other than the fact that he was a great hairdresser, is that he was always in a good mood and happy. In 30+ years, I never experienced him in a bad mood, even when going through all of the treatments. He loved his craft and exceled at it. My husband, daughter and I will miss him so much. But we are very blessed to have known him and how he has dealt with adversity. Let that be a lesson to us all. After all, I saw him more than some of my family members, every 6 weeks for the last 30+ years. The world has lost a wonderful person. As my daughter says "God needs him". We love you Joey. Sam. Not long ago, Joey said to me, "if I die tommorrow, I will have lived a good life. I have a wife that I adore, and children whom I love and admire and friends and family whom I treasure". Joey's tomorrow came sooner than anyone would have ever expected . He will now join the choir of angels and we will forever hear him sing!!! We will celebrate a life well lived.

For 12 years, 3 days a week I was greeted with a vibrant hello, a warm smile, and positive energy to start my day. Today was day one of acceptance that Joey will not be back. He was a caring man and a gentleman in the true sense of the word. He taught me by example the meaning of great guest service. He made everyone feel special and his guests LOVED him! If a guest was late, his response would be "you are worth waiting for". I felt the heaviness today but I know his spirit lives on and surrounds us. Rest in peace dear friend. Xoxo

I am lucky enough to have had Joe as a mentor. As we all have done since hearing of the passing of Joe, I have reflected back on the time I spent with him. Joey was truly the most positive, energetic, entertaining guy I've known. You can't think about him without smiling! I feel so blessed to have been taught by him. The things I've learned from him to become a good hairstylist are invaluable. The life lessons I've learned from him are a blessing. My heart felt condolences go out to Joey's family and friends. Sending thoughts and prayers to Joey's family. I am so saddened by this news. I cannot begin to express my condolences and/or imagine how YOU ALL must be feeling at this time. I had such a fondness for Joey. What a phenominal person. Such a positive attitude, a real presence. He was like a bright ray of sunshine at my early morning (5:30am)appointments even on the bitter winter mornings. His easy way and his bright outlook on life was so infectious. I would leave the salon feeling like a bigger, better person than i did when I walked in! His humble way and his ability to see the world and all of its goodness will be missed! Some people and there mere presence just make the world a better place! I am sure that all of Joey's clients that felt the same way. I am so thankful that I was able to call him my friend. Rest in peace my friend.

As many have written, I too was a 30 year client of Joey. He was certainly the best, I feel like I lost a part of my family as many people in my family were clients as well. Always looked forward to my time with Joey. Rest in peace and take good care!

Dear Imbarlina family

Joey was one of a kind -- lit from within! I have been a client/friend of Joey's for 30+ years. He was so vibrant, funny, loving, humble, good hearted and made everyone feel like the were very special. He was a very loving husband and father and proud of his family. I remember they day he told me Rana was having twins -- he was 3 feet of the ground. My parents always looked forward to my mother's monthly haircut so they could see Joe. He was a master hairdresser but more important he was a master person. God has a true angel and the world has lost a big piece of sunshine (and a great singer!). I can see Joe with his vino singing with Dino and Sinarta. God bless.

Dear Imbarlina Family,
I am so sorry about the loss of Joey. As a 30+ yr client, I had the pleasure of watching a talented, ambitious, hard working and charming young man achieve so much. Always kind, inquisitive, and bright, his knowledge and perfectionism enabled him to be a great mentor and leader in his field. Ultimately, it was his role as proud father, husband and Imbarlina family member that made him a very impressive man. Also, he was so funny and a pretty good singer! He will be missed.

A resounding "Buon Giorno" was heard throughout heaven yesterday as Joey passed through the gates. How I will miss that monthly greeting!

Like many of his clients I have learned a lot from Joe over the past thirty years. He was one of the most positive people I have ever known. There were no "problems" only "challenges" and his optimistic outlook on life will serve as an inspiration to many who knew him. I will miss hearing about his family, his adventures, his stories, his sayings and yes, even his singing!

Rana, Mia and Nicholas, you have my deepest sympathies. He loved you so much and was so proud of you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

The earth's loss is truly heaven's gain. Rest in peace Joe.

It was never about the hair...Joey was GREAT at that, but it was never about the hair. When I left my appointment I felt better...about who I was, who I wanted to be, and more resolved to become something MORE...That's the kind of person Joey was...He didn't even know the effect he had on people. He was always upbeat, positive, caring and unselfish... to the end. I know I will think of Joey often throughout the rest of my life...and strive to be more like he was... IIt was never about the hair

Everything - his smile, his warmth, his heart, his joy in life....just....everything. He was my friend for 30 years and the best in his profession, bar none. He will be missed every day and I will carry his handprint on my heart always. And my hair will never again be quite as great as it was - you were the best, Joey.
