WAITE MARY LOUISE
After an extended illness, Mary Louise Waite (nee Hale), age 81, of Butler, passed away peacefully among dear family and friends due to complications of pneumonia on January 5, 2012. She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends throughout the United Sates and all around the world. Born in Turtlecreek, PA (near Pittsburgh), she was the daughter of Stephen Hale and Mary Shaver. She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1948 and then attended Thiel College in Greenville, PA, until 1949. In 1949, she married Paul N. Waite who had served in the US Army and was then attending Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. After graduation at Allegheny, Paul obtained a Master's degree in business administration from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. They then moved back to Pittsburgh where Mary Lou worked as a secretary before starting a family. From 1954 to 1964, Mary Lou and Paul became the parents of six daughters. In addition, Mary Lou worked side by side with her husband to get him started in the restaurant and real estate holdings business. After Paul died in 1981, Mary Lou continued in the restaurant and real estate investments that Paul had started along with a business partner, William Morrow, of La Quinta, CA, who also graduated from Allegheny. An avid golfer, Mary Lou was accepted for the first female full golf membership at the Butler, PA Country Club where she played for over 20 years. As a partner, she also helped found The Quarry golf course in La Quinta, CA, and a golf course in Branson, MO, as well as in Doonbeg, Ireland. Always interested in being a pilot, she started flying lessons in 1975 at Zelienople, PA airport and then proceeded to become an FAA CCertified Flight Instructor pilot. She taught flying for over 20 years as well as piloting many of her family and friends on flying trips and vacations, particularly to Hilton Head, SC, and Ocala, FL. As a member of the 99's Women Pilots Organization, started by Amelia Earhart, Mary Lou participated in many air races across the US and even into the Caribbean. A very experienced pilot, she flew several search and rescue missions for the Civil Air Patrol in Butler, PA. She was also on the Board of Trustees of Allegheny College as well as the National Council of Women in Aviation. In 1997, she was presented the Amelia Earhart Award for Pioneering Achievement, Demonstrated Courage, Unusual Talent, and Dedication to Thiel College. When her children were grouting up, Mary Lou and all the family spent most of their summers at Conneaut Lake, PA, where they swam, boated, sailed and water-skied. The family still maintains a summer cottage at Conneaut Lake that is enjoyed by the daughters' and grandchildren's families and friends. Passing on before Mary Lou were her mother and father as well as her only brother, William Hale. Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Leo Janssens, also a pilot, whom she married in 2001. Mary Lou and Leo traveled extensively around the US in their own airplane and have traveled to Europe several times for Leo's involvement in the Society of Experimental Test Pilot's conventions. Also surviving are her six daughters, Sandi Stupiansky (Nicholas) of Mayville, NY, Lesley Andrezjewski (Max) of Pittsburgh, Stephanie Vater (Daniel) of Wexford, PA, Paula Sandherr (James) of Cranberry Twp., PA, Aura Cavanaugh of Superior, CO, and Terry Bilecky (Jeffrey) of Superior, CO; Leo has a daughter, Joy Gerogakas (Chris) of Dayton, OH; son, John Janssens (Brigette) of Perrysburg, OH. Mary Lou is also survived by 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One grandchild, Jacob Andrzejewski, passed away in 2006. During her lifetime, Mary Lou was also very involved in many charitable organizations and causes. She was a member of the Nixon United Methodist Church for over 30 years. Mary Lou always found time to volunteer for activities in the church and her flying organizations. A Memorial Service is being planned, it will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 9, at Nixon United Methodist Church with Luncheon to follow. Family will receive visitors on Sunday, January 8, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. also at Nixon United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Nixon United Methodist Church, 334 Airport Road, Butler, PA 16002. Contributions will be used for ministry to needy families as well as for other charitable works of the church. Contributions can also be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (in honor of her great-granddaughter, Amelia), the Lighthouse Foundation, or the Brother's Brother Foundation.

We did meet Mary Lou in Germany, in the City of Mainz, located close to Frankfurt Airport. After a Rhine river tour by boat, she and Leo joined us for dinner at a typical Wine-Restaurant. And there we learned about her so interesting life, especially her aviation-life. Amazing!
It seemed to us that whenever she boarded an aircraft at least one of the pilots was trained by her.

Mary Lou, you were my friend, sister, mother, and mentor. You took me under your wing and showed me how to fly. You shared my family and I shared yours. We shared a lot of laughter and some tears but we always knew we were there for each other. We had so much fun together even if it was just sitting in the hangar watching the airplanes. I will miss you but know that you are without pain now and in a better place. I was blessed that I got to spend a few hours with you before you left this earth and that you said my name and knew who I was. You enriched my life and all those around you. Thank you Mary Lou for just being you. You were special and that same legacy lives on in your girls. I will miss you.

When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards; for there you have been and there you will always be.(Leonardo di Vinci)
She now has her angel wings. She will live on in all the lives that she touched. I will keep her with me on all my flights through her love, friendship, and all the wonderful memories. Thank you for giving me my wings Mary Lou!
My deepest sympathy to all the family.

So sorry to hear about this loss to the world. I met Aunt Mary Lou when I was growing-up. But being on the west coast I truly miss not being able to get to know her more. Would've loved to have seen that Piper Cub of hers!

Please accept our condolences of the Waite clan here in Seattle.

We always knew our grandma as "Grandma Airport." Growing up with a grandma who had airplanes in her home and a runway in her back yard that is no surprise! From riding in the back of the plane on a trip with grandma flying up front to having her prop me up on pillows for the first time to see outside, my grandmother has been and always will by my inspiration. Her passion for life and travel and flight were contagious. I remember her opening the window and letting me try to catch a cloud in my hands and taking me for loops and rolls in her C-150 Aerobat. Doesn't everyone's grandma do this?? I love her and will miss her every day and I know she is golfing and flying in heaven today. She blessed us all with the gift of education through college. She raised 6 beautiful daughters and has over 20 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren to carry on her legacy. As a woman in aviation, I am honored to call Mary Lou Waite my grandmother and hope and pray to make her proud. We miss you and love you grandma.

Leo, thank you for loving and watching after and being such a wonderful companion and husband to grandma. You have blessed all of our lives and en-richened her life in so many ways! You are an amazing addition to our family, an amazing teacher and grandfather and we love you!

If anyone has any flying stories or memories with my grandma (Marie, you mentioned you raced with Grandma) I would love to hear any and all of them.. my email is [email protected]

Thank You

We can never pass the grand fireplace at South Hills C.C. without a smile breaking out on our faces. Just last month we looked at that fireplace and were reminiscing about Mary Lou at the Aero Club of Pittsburgh's Christmas parties there.

Mary Lou could enliven and enrich a crowd by her very presence. She loved life and was so full of life, and she loved people.

Who could forget the legendary Aero Club hangar parties she threw on her lawn? We were setting up for one, and it was there that she taught me the elements of a throwing a good cocktail party. "Always use the tiniest tables or the guests will plop down and sit around all night--I want them mixing".

There are so many memories of ML that we enjoy recounting, and frequently do. But in all the anecdotes, antics, and humorous stories, when it came to aviation, we always saw a safe, professional pilot.
I always wanted to fly with ML. Somehow I never did.

With her passing, our lives are a little more reduced; the quality a little more diminished. She added verve, and spark, and friendship to our lives. We hadn't seen ML during these last years of illness, but we always knew she was "out there".

Our sincere condolences to Leo and the entire Waite family. You memories are much more abundant than ours, and may they sustain you and console you through this difficult time.

Fly high, Mary Lou. Our air racing days together are among the highlights of my life. Everything we did together was filled with fun. You brought laughter and happiness to so many people. I'm so glad we were such good friends for all those years. I'll bet you are up there teaching the angels how to fly right now.
Sincere condolences to the family.
