HERBERT L.
Age 67, of Penn Hills, transitioned peacefully, on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Beloved Husband of Lula Hortman; father of Kisha Hawthorne of NJ, LaMar (Alicia) Hortman of MD and Kristopher (Jessica) Hortman of NC; son of Lullie and the late Ester B. Hortman of WI; brother of Gertrude Jacobs, Phillip Hortman, Worthington Hortman, and Elston Hortman; grandfather of Aidan, Noah, Erinsimone, and Kristopher Troy Lee; he is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends. Mr. Hortman was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., an agent for Allstate and proprietor of the Hortman Insurance Agency. Mr. Hortman served as Deacon at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church for many years and served as the President of the Board of the Mt. Ararat Community Activity Center. Visitation Monday 4-8 p.m. in the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, 271 Paulson Ave., East Liberty, where Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send charitable contributions to Mt. Ararat Cmnty. I am praying for the Hortman family during your time of loss. Mr. Hortman was such a nice man that I had the pleasure getting to know during the time he was our insurance agent and as a member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church. He will be missed!

My dear friends, Deacon Hortman always greeted you with a smile, a joke or two and left you better than he found you. He personified his love for the Lord daily and especially in his commitment to his church family, community and friends.
There is not a more wonderful love story than that of Herb and Lula, which includes their children.
I know he will be missed but he left a wonderful legacy of love, a road map of how to share God's gifts with others. Be encouraged Lula and family because of the life Deacon Hortman lived. May God continue to bless you and be your strength and guide.

I had the pleasure of knowing Herb through Allstate Insurance. I started in the Sears store and Herb helped me daily with questions. He always did it with a smile on his face and a joke on his lips!

I can't think about Brother Herb without thinking about what a model Christian man he was. He and his beloved wife were so earnest and sincere in the work of the church and also in church work that were a marvel to behold. God rest Herb's soul in peace.
