EGAN
ROBERT BRENNAN
Age 86, of Gulf Stream, FL and formerly of Fox Chapel, PA, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon, January 10, 2017, in the company of his wife Barbara and family. He was born on January 4, 1931, son of Judge John P. and Luceille Murray Egan of Pittsburgh, PA. He graduated from Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, and subsequently received a BA from Yale College and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. In 1956, he married the former Ann Ames Midwood of Nayatt Point, Rhode Island with whom he had four children. Bob began his professional career with Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation. Over the next 28 years, he was promoted through increasingly challenging sales and marketing roles, culminating in his elevation to Group President of the Metals and Metal Products Group of Allegheny International. In 1985, Bob and an investor group acquired Alloys Rods Corporation, a specialty welding products manufacturer. As Chairman and CEO of Alloy Rods, he significantly increased sales and profitability by developing innovative products and opening production facilities in Asia and Europe. He sold Alloy Rods in 1989 to The ESAB Group. Bob served on numerous corporate boards, including Titanium Metals Corporation of America, Rob Roy Industries and Elliott Turbomachinery. He loved golf - the competition, the traditions and the lifelong friendships developed through the game. Bob always worked on "his game" and rarely shied away from offering swing advice to anyone who asked. He was particularly proud of his numerous club championship titles, as well as his 1992 victory in the Western Pennsylvania Senior Amateur Championship. Bob served as President of the Fox Chapel Golf Club and President of the Pennsylvania Golf Association. He was a longtime member of the United States Seniors' Golf Association and a regular competitor on the Pennsylvania team of the Lesley Cup. Bob also gave back to the community, especially to organizations providing drug and alcohol rehabilitation services. He was particularly committed to the mission of Gateway Rehab serving as a long-term board member and then Chairman of the Board from 1990 to 1995. He also served as a Trustee of Shady Side Hospital for many years. While in Florida, he supported Wayside House in Delray Beach, FL. Bob also served as an Adjunct Professor of Industrial Marketing at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University for several years. Most of all, Bob will be remembered for his love of family, friends and life. He never lost his passion for getting the most out of each day, celebrating time spent with his numerous grandchildren, extended family and lifelong friends. He loved to meet new people, enthusiastically sharing his energy and sense of humor. Bob happily imparted his pearls of wisdom and life advice to his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Bubs." He is survived by his wife, Barbara Forrester Egan, who brought him great joy and happiness in his later life. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ann Midwood Egan, to whom he was married 55 years. He is also survived by his children, Robert B. Egan, Jr., of Oakland, CA, Emily E. Thomas of Wilmette, IL, George M. Egan of Jacksonville, FL, and Sarah E. Hebert of South Berwick, ME; daughters-in-law, Kimberly W. Egan and Anne T. Egan; sons-in-law, Douglas P. Thomas and Edward A. Hebert; and 11 grandchildren. The family suggests remembrances to Gateway Rehab, 311 Rouser Road, Moon Township, PA 15108 www.gatewayrehab.org. A service will be held this spring in Pittsburgh in celebration of his wonderful life. Arrangements by JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC.
