Robert Moppert Obituary

Moppert, Robert J.

Binghamton: Robert J. Moppert, 69, Retired Director of Economic Development for New York State passed away on Wed. morning Dec. 7, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Caroline Moppert, son & daughter-in-law, Kevin & Tracey Moppert Sr, his grandchildren, Vanessa Moppert, Kevin Moppert Jr, Mason, Nicholas, Patrick, Michael & Christopher, his great grandchildren, Madison & Dominick, sister & brother-in-law, Lee & Bill Merrell and also several nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his son, Gregg Moppert, parents, Margaret & Joseph Moppert, sister & brother-in-law, Betty & Leo Heffernan and brother William Moppert. He was former co-owner with his good friend, Jim Wardell of Mapes Mayflower Moving Co, a member of Hillcrest Rotary, where he held many offices on the local & district levels. Bob was an active Board Member of the Sheltered Workshop, a trustee of BCC, former Broome County Legislator and a US Navy Veteran. He was the organist for the Broome Dusters and Binghamton Mets. These are only a small portion of the many interests, hobbies and accomplishments that were part of Bob's life. He was a loving grandfather and an avid Red Sox fan. He liked meeting with the Thursday morning CV alumni group and also meeting Thursday nights at "The Table of Knowledge." Most of all, he really enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Corner of Leroy & Oak Streets, Binghamton. Burial will be in Chenango Valley Cemetery, Hillcrest. The family will receive friends at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home 69-71 Maple Street Harpursville on Sun. from 1 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hillcrest Rotary Scholarship Fund POB 137 Chenango Bridge, NY 13745 or the Chenango Valley Education Fund POB 1137 Binghamton, NY 13902. Met Bob when he was a year or two into his business career - 1st with the Brite Spot in Chenango Bridge, then the sporting goods shop in Hillcrest. I was just out of high school (15 years his junior) and thought he was pretty smart and pretty funny, too. I moved out of NY in '79 but never forgot him. As time went on, I remembered both some of the funny things he said and some of the wise business ideas and maxims. My loss for not keeping in touch, but what a great man he was. I realize this is 5 years past the date, but I hope his family and friends have wonderful, warm thoughts of him. If I could be half the man he was, I would feel quite accomplished.

Dear Caroline, our deepest condolences. I remember Bob taking me in the Green Vega station wagon to all the Broome Dusters home games. He even set me up with the Cape Codders when they were in town as their "stick associate".(What a thrill to be on the Arena ice!) I also will never forget how well he treated my Mom, when she worked for him at both the "Brite Spot" sub shops. She & our whole family loved "Norby" (a name given to Bob affectionately by Big Mare & Diane Titus). Bob was one of a kind, especially when tasked to come up with the theme song for the Broome Dusters...of course....Bad Bad Leroy Brown. What an incredible time to be involved with hockey & with Bob in Broome County. We will treasure those memories forever.
Thank you Caroline for being such dear friends to our family & giving us so many great memories.
God Bless...

Carol:

I'm so sorry to learn of Bob's passing. Bob was a great mentor to me and his support and advice in politics was much appreciated. The story of the two of you building up the little convenience store and then building businesses together was a great inspiration. And even though I didn't know Bob during the Duster days I can still hear "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown". What a great guy and a terrible loss for you, your kids and this community.

Carolyn & Family
Bob gave so much to the community, it seemed everyone knew his name. We remember him playing the organ for the hocky and baseball games. When he didn't like calls against Binghamton he would play "Three Blind Mice".
He was so good natured and Binghamton has lost a jewel

To Mrs. Moppert, Kevin Jr, and the rest of the family. We are so sorry to hear about Mr. Moppert's passing. He was a great role model; always offering words of encouragement to all of us kids. We enjoyed seeing him on occasion where he would always stop and take time to say hello and kid around with us. He was great that way -always upbeat. That didn't go unnoticed. We will always remember his jokes and his pranks. Although we are away at school we want to send our thoughts and prayers to the family.

"Mr. Moppert" was my next store neighbor growing up on Jessie Drive. As a boy, I fondly remember that he would play his organ while we were tossing the football around in the street. I also have great memories from volunteering on his congressional campaign in 1992--mostly of his quick smile and bellowing laugh. Bob was a strong, warm presence and consummate good citizen. He will be greatly missed.

While I did not know Mr. Moppert personally, I was one of the regular Otsiningo Park walkers during the summer of 2009 and recall him sitting at "his" picnic table, usually reading a book and listening to his earphones. He always managed a smile and a wave at all of us as we did our exercise and he enjoyed the sun and warmth of that beautiful park. I ALSO remember him and his black Mustang convertible and how proud he was of that. We will be missed.

Caroline and family; A lot of people will be bringing their thoughts and memories of Bob in the next few days ahead. But I will always remember him for something he was involved with before all of his other endeavors. When I was a young lad growing up in Hillcrest and having friends that lived in Chenango Bridge, we often would meet at a famous sub shop. Bob would open up "The Brite Spot". His subs were second to none. I think the secret was the roll and the sub sauce. After seeing his success from the Bridge, he would then open up Brite Spot 2 in Hillcrest. Bob was a great man that you instantly become magnetized to. So I would like to thank Caroline and family for sharing Bob with the world. The world was a better place with Bob in it. In the last couple of years I would see Bob at the B-Met games where I would always reminisce about the Brite Spot days. May all of your family find peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Carol,

Our hearts and our thoughts are with you and the familiy at this difficult time. The picture posted on the guestbook brings back those wonderful memories of working with Bob when he was a legislator, Director of Economic Development (remember those great Christmas luncheons?) and when he came on the BCC Board of Trustees. As others have said, he lived life fully and we never had to quess what he was thinking. I can't imagine a better way to go through this short time we have on earth. We will miss him.

Carol - I am so saddened by the news. You know how big an influence Bob was on me since I was 15 .. err 16.. Because of him I am an international business guy. He was my inspiration and early mentor ("line those donuts up like little ducks pukeface" - sniff/lol). I so remember the many evenings coming up to the house to report on the business and the many family/ freinds moments you shared. Writing my first memo's and working my butt off for a little praise... all good lessons in life. My intro into Rotary world and his many bsuienss freinds that still inspire me today. My prayers that he is in a GREAT place looking down on us all and having another laugh. My support for you in that you carry on with his life long love of you and know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Joe Ranieri Jr (Singapore/China)

Bob was a great man and a great friend. He lived life as a "doer", not an observer! He was a man on the go with people to see and places to go. He squeezed every drop of life out of his time on earth.
He lived the American Dream and found success in all of his endeavors through hard work and perserverance. He inspired many others to believe in themselves and follow their dreams. He was fortunate to have an amazing woman Caroline by his side every step of the way.
We celebrate his life and his passion for living. Bob Moppert left the world a better place! I am honored to have known him!
