Thelma Monk Obituary

Thelma Watts Monk
of Lisle
Thelma Watts Monk, Lisle, New York, aged 97 years, with her family at her side, slipped into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, May 31st, 2009. Born in Center Lisle on August 8, 1911, Thelma was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Alice Glezen Watts; husband, Edmund S. Monk; son, Craig W. Monk; grandsons, Craig Jr., Wesley P. and Mark Monk; brother, Dr. J. Glezen Watts; sister-in-law, Marjorie Dointge Watts; nephew, Corky Watts. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Beverly Lant Monk; grandson, Jesse M. Monk (Lucinda Bieber); granddaughter, Lois (Bill) Marshall; great-grandchildren, Katie Morgan, Jessica, Jamie and Garrett Monk; great-great-granddaughter, Alayna Morgan; beloved niece, Sally (Robert) Rodgers of Colorado; nephew, Paul (Rebecca) Rodgers and their son, Benjamin. There are many relatives in the Watts, Glezen, Monk, Bieber, Lant and Forshee families and in her extended Hopkins, Morgan and Marshall families. She also had so many friends over the many years that she held in her mind with love and gratitude, including Larry and Betty Doolittle, Eloise Dauley, Peg Kemp, Joe and Donna Silvanic, Amy Acla, Jo and Howard Sprague, Gehm family and many others. During World War II, Thelma successfully operated a beauty shop in Berkshire and Lisle vicinities. She graduated from Cortland Normal State College in Cortland and began a 20-year teaching career at Whitney Point Central School in 6th grade, until she retired in 1977. She was a 70-year member of the St. Patrick's Church, Whitney Point, having been the organist and choir director for eight years. She was also a member of the Lisle Ladies' Auxiliary, St. Patrick's Hospitality Group and Eastern Broome Retired Teachers Organizations, Yorkshire Rebekah Lodge and the Maple Leaf Golden Agers, with whom she enjoyed many trips.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Patrick's Church, Kiebel Road, Whitney Point by Rev. Jeremiah Katz, celebrant, on Friday, June 5, 2009, at 10 a.m. The Yorkshire Rebekah Lodge will conduct farewell services at the burial. If desired, expressions of sympathy in Thelma's memory may be made to the Lisle Ladies' Auxiliary, St. Patrick's Hospitality Group or a charity of one's choice. To all her friends of many years, including those of years ago and those most recent, Thelma would want these words said, "I am very grateful to those who have been my ears, my eyes, and my strong arm. And I appreciate the many rides and gracious listeners." Thelma enjoyed thinking and speaking of Jesus' words, "In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." John 14:2.

I hope that I can be an example to other women in the many ways Mrs. Monk was to me. My sixth-grade teacher, she showed me that being an excellent student was a good thing. She also showed me that music is a great source of joy and of social contact. I continue to sing in choirs to this day. She taught me to sing harmony and to work with adults in her church choir, being part of a group that she led in her thoughtful way. She was the first soprano I ever remember hearing and wondering at. My condolences to family and friends.

I remember as if it were yesterday...the summer of fifth grade I got the news that I would have Mrs. Thelma Monk for my 6th grade teacher. I panicked! Horror stories traveled through the school on how mean she was.

Wow, were the rumors wrong! It wasn't long before she was inviting me up to her classroom to share an intimate lunch w/her rather than the eat in the cafeteria like most other students. We shared so many stories, laughs and special times. It was an honor! I giggle as I remember her calling me "Edwards" as she always referred to her students by their last name.

She was the BEST teacher EVER & will be sadly missed by us all. My sympathy to her family.

Auth Thelma will be missed deeply. She was such an asset to our family. A lady of dignity, humor, and grace. I can picture her "dancing with our father God in fields of grace" and rejoicing with the reunion with my dad and other loved ones. Our loss, but her gain.

I will miss Aunt Thelma so much, she was
such a wonderful person,such a dear sweet
lady. She was such a part of our family, and we have so many wonderful memories of
her. I will always remember the time she
came to my home for a Mothers Day celebration with my mom and sisters, we
had so much fun, and so did she. A finer, sweeter, more loving lady you will
never meet. I love you Aunt Thelma, and
will see you again someday!

Our condolences from the Bill Edmister Family. Mrs. Monk was a great family friend and my (Rolanda's) 6th Grade Teacher. She made me into a student! She cared so much! A few hours before I learned of her passing, I was telling one of my sons teachers about her...and how much her caring and help in 6th Grade helped me. My sons loved to stop and visit my "lady teacher" when we were in NY for family visits. She was always delighted and delightful. One of our last visits, she said to me, "I sat here and prayed and prayed this morning that someone would come visit me, and here you are".

A light has gone out in No.Broome County. Thelma will be deeply missed by family, friends and neighbors. She was an example to so many, including all the children whose lives she helped to mold. She was my biggest "fan" and I shall miss her letters of encouragement and love. She was a loving friend. I shall miss those occasionaly letters, filled with snipettes of articles, pictures, cartoons that reminded her of me and/or my husband. Thelma Monk was truly used of God. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family. Love,Charlotte Rogers Sherman
