Constance HJERTBERG Obituary

Constance Hjertberg passed away January 25, 2013. A fifteen year resident of Silvercrest (Salvation Army Towers). She took lunch to shut ins while her health allowed. When Pedy's Flower Shop opened nearby, Pedy gave Constance day old flowers which she took home and arranged bouquets for Silvercrest residents she thought needed cheer. Every morning she took a cup of coffee down the hall to a shut in, even the day before she gave up and went to the hospital. Born in Modesto in 1922, she left college at the start of World War II to become a welder of Liberty ships in Stockton. She became an Army officer's wife and raised three children. While her husband was stationed in postwar Germany, she ran a day care center for children of allied troops, learning French, German and Russian in the process. The family settled in Maryland, where Constance got involved in real estate, eventually becoming a successful Land Broker. She divorced her husband and raised her children alone. When they were all on their own she decided to leave the eastern weather extremes and return to California. She leaves her children, Holly Cool, who was by her side when she passed, husband Bob Cool, Consie Dahl and husband Dick Dahl, Eric Hjertberg, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren, sister Nancy Stephan and husband Richard, four nieces, Kathleen, Catherine, Elizabeth, Peggy and nephew, Douglas. There will be a memorial service in the dining room at Silvercrest, 1050 Third Street at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 30. Friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations to Heartland Hospice would be appreciated. They worked hard to keep Constance as pain free as possible. The family is also grateful to the dedicated people at Creekside Convalescent Hospital who were considerate and prompt in doing whatever was needed.
