Mark Blackney Obituary

Mark Vincent Blackney, 81, passed away peacefully October 8, 2010 in Salem, OR. He was born June 26, 1929 in Frankfort, KS to Arthur and Charlsie Blackney. Following his brothers, he and his mother moved to Napa in 1944 where as a track star and a member of the Napa High marching band, Mark met sweetheart June Marie Smith. Married in 1948, the two soon became a happy, loving family of six. Moving on to Concord and a partnership in Diablo Floors, Santa Rosa and his company Blackney Floors, and Middletown retirement, Mark and June returned to Napa in 2002. That same year, their heaven on earth was short-lived when his bride of 54 years June suddenly passed away, followed in 2004 with the tragic loss of their son David Alan Blackney of Santa Rosa. Fate surprised Mark when he once again fell in love, marrying Elizabeth Asher in 2006, making their new home Salem, OR. Mark was an avid golfer and active member of SIRS and Covenant Presbyterian Church of Napa, as well as coach of various baseball teams, leader of Webelo and Cub Scouts, baritone of barber shop quartets, and a friend and "Papa" to all he met. With wife Elizabeth, Mark is survived by his children: Mark Blackney and wife Fran of Clovis, Judy DuPont and husband Don of Loomis, Tom Blackney and wife Susan of Elk Grove; brothers William Blackney and Charles Blackney and wife Lucy, of Napa; brother-in-law, Harold Smith of Vallejo. Grandchildren: Jeannine, Stephanie, Kevin, Scott, Corinne, Amy, Allison, Lauren, Brett, Sam and Emily; and great-grandchildren Justin, Jack, Jaylen, Tyler, Eleanor and Amelia. A private celebration with family and friends will be held October 30th.

I miss Mark and also June; we had some of our best card games with them on Boxer Blvd., and of course, we enjoyed our card games in Hidden Valley lake as well.

Mr Blackney(as i called him) was very special to me and my family..we all lived on Boxer blvd in Concord..i was actually born on this blvd that holds so many special memories for me!! One of my earliest memories is of a Saturday or Sunday morning I got up and out of bed(I was 2) went outside and to the blackneys house where Mr Blackney met me at the door..I tugged oh his pj pants and it was then that he saw me and promptly put me into bed with he and Mrs Blackney..he called my parents to tell them of my escape..I loved those days and will always hold a special place in my heart for the whole Blackney family...God Bless Mr Blackney!!
