JAMES HOOPES Obituary
HOOPES, JAMES G. III 40 - of Northfield passed away suddenly on Wednesday, September 12, 2012. Jim was born in Atlantic City on August 16, 1972 and was raised in Ventnor. He graduated from Holy Spirit High School in 1990 and then Albright College in 1994. At Albright, Jim played basketball, set the school's rebounding record and was recently honored as a member of the Albright College All Century Team. He later went on to obtain his Master's Degree from Seton Hall University. Jim was preceded in death by his father, James G. Hoopes, Jr. Jim is survived by his devoted wife and one true love, Merry, and two loving sons, Jayson and Joey. Jim is also survived by his adoring mother Cathy, sister Lisa (Drew) Gibson, Father-in-Law Joseph Rich, Jr., sister in law Melissa (Greg) Calderone, nieces Isabella, Kaylee, and Kendall, nephew Christian and many close and loyal friends. Jim toured the United States playing professional basketball with the Washington Generals. He then went on to teach Spanish and coach basketball at Holy Spirit High School while working summers at the Greenhouse in Margate. In November 1998, Jim graduated from the 118th New Jersey State Police class. He proudly and honorably served as a State Trooper for 14 years. Jim spent time with all his boys enjoying numerous sporting trips and events no matter how distant. He was an inspiring volunteer in Northfield who made a difference in the lives of countless children. He coached many teams to Championships in football, basketball, and baseball. Jim mastered the art of living. He brought an unparalleled enthusiasm, dedication and passion to all aspects of his life. He was a devoted family man whose greatest love was his wife and sons. Jim Hoopes made the world a better place. Visitations will be held Monday, September 17th at St. Gianna Beretta Molla Parish â€" St. Bernadette Church, 1421 New Rd., Northfield from 6:00PM-8:30PM with a Youth Visitation in jerseys from 5:30PM-6:00PM A visitation will be held Tuesday, September 18th 9:30AM-11:00AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM. Burial will be private at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jayson and Joseph Hoopes Scholarship Fund at PO Box 172, Linwood, NJ 08221. Arrangements by George H. Wimberg Funeral Home.

It broke my heart to here that this gentle giant is no longer with us. I grew up with Jimmy, he will always be Jimmy to me. We lived on Surrey Avenue together, and played many hours of neighborhood tag together as kids. He was one of the nicest, funniest people you could have the honor to meet. A great kid who grew up into a great man. Godspeed Jimmy. Thank you for all of the great times we had as kids.

I am very saddened to have read this in the paper. Mr Hoops was a great man. I ment him at Home Depot doing the Kids Workshop. He and his boys had been comming for years. I'm still in shock of Jimmy's passing. A lot of my childhood memories involved him. We went to St.James together & then HSHS. We had such a small class @ St.James & we all lived so close it was inevitable that we would have a lifetime bond. He was truly a great man. These are the times that I hate living so far away. I am still in shock after a good friend told me of Jimmy's passing..I had just had a dream with Jim and was about to write to him since I had not heard from him in a while. I met "Jaimito"at Albright and helped him with spanish, we became good friends.. years after graduation I began receiving letters from unknown people! surprise!! Jaimito had asked his spanish students to write to me as a penpal! :) that was him, an AWESOME guy, a good friend always happy,full of laughter and a positive thinker. I consider Jim more of an acquaintance but I certainly wish I got to know him better. I coached against him and would say I held my own, at best, against his remarkable coaching ability. I watched Jim coach and I thought this is a guy who can teach me a lot and he was 4 yrs my junior. He had that aura about him and definitely had a gift with people, especially the kids. Trooper Hoopes was assigned to me as my mentor in the New Jersey State Police Academy. I always regarded him as the ideal New Jeraey State Trooper who always focused his attention on training recruits to be the very best and devoted himself as a decorated New Jersey State Trooper, sports coach, husband and father. His powerful presence, athleticism, carisma, striking personality, intelligence and professionalism are some of the few characteristics that made him a man to look up to and aspire to be. He will be greatly missed. The entire New Jersey State Police family are absolutely devasted by this loss. I/we extend out deepest condolences to his family and are here to support them in their time of grievence. I urge everyone to reflect on their own personal situations to recognize that life is too short. Embrace your loved ones, express how much they mean to you, and live life each day as if it were your last. Too much is taken for granted and it is losses like this that should make every one realize that life is precious. We are all here for a reason. Enjoy every encounter, experience, and relationship you have. Cherish it all. Two distraught boys have lost a father, a beautiful wife is grieving the loss of a devoted husband. I met this fine man actually at his father's funeral. Our platoon(VCPD) escorted his dad out of town and after I would run into him at the gym and he would always say thanks again. Mr. Hoopes was my Spanish teacher at Holy Spirit High School. A life taken way too soon. Prayers go out to the Hoopes family.

Jim's journey was full of humor, courage and grace. He touched so many lives. It blew me away when I read this remembrance. Eventough we were only classmates, my heart goes out to all that are mourning his loss. Please take care and know my family is praying for you at this time.

Jim was a great great guy a true gentle giant. It seems every sporting event i attended i saw jim with his two sons. My heart breaks for his family god bless you all.
