Paul Healey

HEALEY, PAUL J.M., 79, of Emery Road in Warren, died peacefully Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Miriam Hospital surrounded by his family. For 50 years, he was the beloved husband of the late Nancy Jane (Ogg) Healey. Paul now joins his eternal sweetheart in Heaven. Paul was born in Pawtucket, the third of six sons of Dr. Joseph E. and Louise (Shanley) Healey. He graduated from St. Raphael's Academy in 1949, Fordham University in 1953 and Boston University School of Medicine in 1958. After his surgical training at Boston City Hospital from 1958 until 1963, he returned to Pawtucket, where he began his 30-year career in general and vascular surgery. A steadfast father and provider, Dr. Healey is survived by his 10 children: Timothy J. Healey of Riverside; Dr Patrick J. Healey and his wife Pamela of Seattle, WA; Mary-Kathryn Lynch and her husband John of Rumford; Michael J. Healey and his wife Amy of Barrington; Maura H. Rogers and her husband Patrick of Rumford; Marthe-Anne Monagle and her husband Kevin of Rumford; Jennifer H. Kirby and her husband William of Rumford; Ellen H. Sullivan and her husband Timothy of Attleboro, MA; P. Daniel Healey and his wife Jennifer of Havertown, PA, and Meghan H. Gosselin and her husband Russell of North Attleboro, MA. Paul also leaves brothers, Dr. Benjamin R. Healey and Dr. Eugene H. Healey, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Dr. Healey was a loving and much-loved "Papa" of 28 grandchildren: Aidan and Ciaran Healey of Seattle, WA; Keenan, Owen, Teresa, Daniel and Grace Lynch of Rumford; Sydney and Spencer Healey of Doylestown, PA, and Samuel and Mick Healey of Barrington; Timothy, Claire, Ellen and Brendan Rogers of Rumford; Anne, Jack, Mary and Michael Monagle of Rumford; Paul and Patrick Brennan of Rumford; Jeremiah, Luke, Ryan and Molly Sullivan of Attleboro, MA; and Onora, Maeve and Sean Healey of Havertown, PA. From 1963 until 1991, Dr. Healey's primary surgical practice was at The Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. He also was affiliated with Miriam Hospital from 1967 to 1991, St. Joseph's Hospital in Providence from 1964 to 1991 and Notre Dame Hospital in Central Falls from 1967 to 1991, serving as the hospital's Chief of Surgery from 1976 until 1981. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Pawtucket Medical Association and Rhode Island Medical Society, serving as its president from 1984 to 1985. Also active in the American College of Surgeons, he served as president of its Rhode Island Chapter from 1977 to 1979. He was president of the Providence Surgical Society from 1982 to 1983, a director of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island from 1977 to 1992 and a director of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care Inc. from 1979 to 1983. Dr. Healey in 1976 founded Blackstone Valley Surgicare Inc., an ambulatory surgery center in Pawtucket that at the time was the sixth free-standing same-day surgery center in the country. Long involved in surgical education, he trained surgical residents from Boston University School of Medicine from 1963 to 1991and from Brown University Medical School from 1991 until 1994. Dr. Healey lent his time and talent to dozens of civic, community and religious organizations. Chief among these was his role as medical director of the Little Sisters of the Poor's Jeanne Jugan Residence in Pawtucket for more than 40 years. He also served as a director of the Blackstone Valley ARC and founded its fund-raising golf tournament, the Blackstone Valley Open, in 1981. He was inducted into its Hall of Fame. Other involvement included the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce, Pawtucket YMCA, Samuel Slater Museum, St. Margaret School, Providence Boys & Girls Club, Rotary Club of Pawtucket and Sons of Irish Kings. He also belonged to the University Club in Providence and the To Kalon Club in Pawtucket and was an enthusiastic member of Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, Pawtucket Country Club and The Forest Country Club in Fort Myers, FL. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial for Dr. Healey Friday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Margaret's Church, Pawtucket Avenue, Rumford to which relatives and friends are invited.
