Entrepreneur and Philanthropist
Terrence J. McGlinn, Sr., 77, of Brownsville Road, Sinking Spring, passed away on September 12, 2017, surrounded by his loving family at home.
He was the husband of Barbara Ann (Tait) McGlinn. In June, they celebrated 53 years of marriage.
He was the son of the late John F. McGlinn Sr. and
Elizabeth (Ganly) McGlinn.
Terry was a 1958 graduate of Central Catholic High School, Reading. He earned a baccalaureate degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame in 1962 and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in 1964. The University of Notre Dame awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2004.
After graduation, Terry worked as an investment officer in Reading, Pa. Shortly thereafter he established his own investment management firm, McGlinn Capital Management Inc., serving corporations, unions, families and limited partnerships. His firm grew to over $2.5 billion in assets over the course of his ownership. Terry sold the firm to Meridian Bank & Trust Company in 1995. He continued to manage the business until assets under management reached $4.5 billion and then retired in 1999.
He then purchased All Star Distributing Company, a central Pennsylvania beverage distribution company. He was also an investor in Dimensions Inc. and Narrow Fabric Corporation.
Terry actively engaged in philanthropy in the Berks County community and at the University of Notre Dame. He and his family formed Colonial Oaks Foundation in 1992, a private foundation that contributed generously to many Berks County organizations including: Alvernia University, Berks Catholic High School, Caron Foundation, the Diocese of Allentown, GoggleWorks, Olivet Boys and Girls Clubs, St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church, the United Way of Berks County, and many other humanitarian organizations, primarily in the areas of healthcare and Catholic education.
Terry served on the Board of Trustees of the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, now Reading Health System, for 30 years and chaired the Board from 2000 until 2004. In 2003, Terry and his wife Bobbie established the McGlinn Family Regional Cancer Center at the Reading Hospital.
Terry had a passion for the University of Notre Dame. His first role with the University after graduation was on its Business Advisory Council, to which Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., appointed him. In 1994, Notre Dame's Board of Trustees elected him a trustee. He served as a member of its Board until 2010. He was appointed a Fellow of the University and served as Vice Chair of the Endowment Committee that administered Notre Dame's $10 billion endowment. Terry was a joint donor of the Mendoza Business School at Notre Dame, and in 1997 he and his wife donated McGlinn Hall, a woman's residence hall for 300 students.
Terry enjoyed travel with family and friends. He enjoyed the solitude of Fairview Lake in the Pocono Mountains each summer, Football Saturdays in South Bend each fall and the warmth of Naples, Florida each winter. He loved spending time at Colonial Oaks with his family and being "Poppa." When he couldn't be with them, he was very fond of talking and texting with his adoring grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Terry is survived by four children: Margaret A. Shields (Patrick), Wyomissing, John F. McGlinn II (Melissa), Malvern, Christine R. Auman
(Theodore), Sinking Spring, and Terrence J. McGlinn Jr. (Kristin), Sinking Spring; and by 12 grandchildren: Patrick, Lindsay, Conor and Amy Shields; Daniel, Tait, Johnny and Kelly McGlinn; Theodore Jr., Carter and Margaret Auman; and Terrence J. McGlinn III.
Also surviving is a sister, Betty Anne (McGlinn) Strobel, Wyomissing.
He was predeceased by two brothers, John F. ("Jack") McGlinn and James F. McGlinn.
The family will receive friends at the Kuhn Funeral Home, West Reading, on Sunday, September 17th from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Loyola Church on Monday, September 18th at 10 a.m.
A block of rooms has been reserved for out of town guests at the Courtyard Marriott of Reading/Wyomissing, 150 North Park Road, Reading, PA, (610) 378-1137.

My sympathies and prayers to the McGlinn family. Terry was a wonderful, kind and highly respected, self made, Icon. He was always a real pleasure to be around. His smile and wit were riveting. He treated every person he met with dignity and genuine concern. Many will be saddened by his departure. He helped make this world a better place, and that is a tribute that few can claim.
