Matthew Florczyk Obituary

WALLINGFORD - Matthew Alexander Florczyk, M.D., PhD. of Nanuet, N.Y., formerly of Wallingford, died peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, after a long illness. Matt was the beloved husband of Julia Li Florczyk, PhD.

He was born in Syracuse, N.Y. on Nov. 12, 1972.
Besides his wife Julia, he is survived by his parents, Alexander and Virginia Florczyk of Wallingford,; his brother, Michael Florczyk (Jennifer Florczyk) of North Attleboro, Mass.; his brother, William Florczyk (Sarah Florczyk) of Concord, N.C.; his sister, Suzanne Florczyk of West Hartford.

Matt was a 1990 graduate of Mark T. Sheehan High School in Wallingford. He went on to graduate from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., in 1993, with a Bachelor of Science degree, in Biology. In 2000, he earned a PhD degree in infectious diseases from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Public Health, State University of New York, at Albany. He then went on to complete a two-year post-doctoral program at the Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health. Matt earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College, in May 2007. He was a first year resident at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, N.Y., when he was taken ill.

In his short time as an internal medicine intern at Montefiore Medical Center, Matt quickly developed a reputation for being sharp, hard working, and a team player dedicated to excellence for his patients. He applied these same attributes to all aspects of his life. His life is a great example of what it meant to be a good physician and person, through determination, humility and compassion.
Although Matt was committed to furthering his education and medical training, he enjoyed many extracurricular activities. Matt coached youth hockey in the Albany area, during his graduate school days. In addition, he enjoyed outdoor activities including scuba diving, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, photography, travel and tennis. His ultimate enjoyment was hiking in the woods with his wife, and their two Maltese dogs, TienTien and GiGi. His larger than life personality and sense of humor impacted all those that knew him.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St Ext. Wallingford on Sunday, Jan. 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. Memorial services will take place in the funeral home at 3:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established to provide an award to a graduating student who exemplifies Matt's courage and dedication, both in his life and educational endeavors. Contributions can be made payable to Health Research, Inc. and sent to the Matthew Florcyzk Memorial Fund, c/o Health Research Inc., Riverview Center, 150 Broadway Suite 560, Menands, N.Y. 12204-2719. www.wallingfordfh.com.

I met Matt when he was coaching a youth hockey team in the association I helped run. Matt was a great coach who taught the players more than the game of hockey. I also played hockey with Matt in the SUNY Bio group. Even though Matt was an excellant hockey player he allways included all the players in the game no matter what their skill level was. A Great coach, a great person, and a great loss.

Dear Julia and the Florczyk family,

We were so sorry to hear of Matt's passing. We were away last week and learned via an e-mail from Eddie Pagan.

We send our deepest sympathy for your loss.

We want to let you know how much we enjoyed our interactions with Matt when we played tennis together or bumped into him when walking the dogs. He was so full of life. In tennis, he had a fun, wonderful competitive spirit. When chatting with him, he always had a ready smile and positive outlook, even through his illness. It was always encouraging to see him.

We appreciated his positive spirit. He impacted our lives for the good and we were fortunate to spend time with him.

Sincerely,

Val Soto and William Waller

To Julia, Mr. and Mrs. Florczyk and family,

As a friend of Julia's, I got to know Matt through her stories as their relationship grew from friendship into marriage. These recollections of their time together made it so very clear that he brought her tremendous happiness. As my husband and I got to know him, it was plain that his charm, humor, intellect and kindness made him a perfect fit for Julia. It is not often that a person leaves such a positive and lasting impression on you. Matt was one of those special people.

Our prayers and thoughts are with you in your time of grief. May the memory of Matt's accomplishments and endeavors, the lives that he touched, and the happiness that he found in his love of Julia bring you comfort and peace in your hearts.

I knew Matt for many years. He was an outstanding person and a great hockey player. His skills and ability as a hockey coach were a great inspiration to my sons, who both went on to win championships. We played togather in the SUNY-Bio hockey league, and he was very quick to get a band-aid and get back on the ice after a hit. He was a very skilled player and comitted to the sport. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

I'm so sorry to hear of Matt's passing. I worked with Matt in the mid 1990's when he was a graduate student at the Wadsworth Institute and I was a technician. He and I spent a lot of time together hanging out waiting for experiments to run. His exuberance and sharp sense of humor made him a joy to be around. I am just now starting out in medical school myself, and had no idea that he had gone on to earn his MD. I know from the time we spent together those many years ago that he would have made a terrific doctor! I hope that I can bring to my future patients the same warmth, compassion and knowledge that Matt surely brought to his. My deepest condolences to all of you on his passing.

It was an honor for me to work with Matt at Montefiore. Matt was my intern during our month on the Oncology floor. His hard work and dedication to his patients was truly remarkable. Al & Ginny: I am so shocked and saddened to learn of Matthew's passing. Although it's been many years since Al and I worked together at Bristol, I can still remember vividly that your family and 4 young children were so dear and precious to both of you. Al spoke of them on a daily basis and how they played hockey. It always amazed me back then how he managed to fit in all of the hockey activities and family commitments! Matt was an extrordinary person and I'm sure it was due mostly to the strong family values you instilled in him. May you find strength in the difficult days ahead from those fond memories of him. Sincerely, Sue

Dear Florczyk Family,
I was shocked when my mother called and broke the news. I had only seen Matt one time since the 'old days'. But I still refer to the house on Skyview as 'The Florczyk's House'. The thing I remember most about Matt was his sense of humor. He made me laugh when we were kids, and it sounds like he continued that tradition as an adult. Please accept my and my families deepest sympathies.

To Matt’s Family,

Please accept my profound condolences. I served as a member of Matt’s Ph.D. thesis committee, and also as an instructor to sophomore medical students at the Albany Medical College. Matt’s academic accomplishments were admirable. As a student he was a pleasure to interact with. It is tragic that he didn’t have more time to share all that he had to offer. But his professional dedication mirrored his traits as an individual. That was obvious even to those of us who didn’t see him everyday. You can be especially proud of him as a person. He must have come from a remarkable family. I share in your sadness and offer my prayers.

Dear Virginia and Alex and family,
It has been a long time since we have seen each other. I can vividly remember seeing you taking the boys when they were little tykes for gymnastics here in Syracuse, NY We had often heard through your mom when she was living (God rest her soul) and your brother how your family was doing after you left Syracuse. You must be so proud of all your children and to lose one son at such a young age must be heartbreaking. Matthew seemed like an amazing person! Such a smart young man -- a doctor who despite all he had to contend with he gave to others. Jerry and I would like to extend our sincere sympathy. Wish I could extend these condolences in person with a hug to all of you. To his wife: may the love that you two shared continue in your heart forever. Virginia, he has for sure joined his Grandma up in heaven. May the memories, the laughter you all shared with him comfort you. I am so, so sorry for your loss. Prayers are with you. . .
