Karl Tews Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 23, 2018.
Karl Richard Tews

Redding, CA

1935 - 2018

Karl Richard (Dick) Tews, 82, passed away January 8, 2018 at his home in Kona, HI with family at his side, after a short and unexpected illness.

A private burial service for the family will be held Wednesday, January 24th at McDonald's Chapel in Redding. The service will be officiated by Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Major James A. Taylor.

Dick was born on November 28, 1935 to Karl and Bella Tews in Hastings, NE. Along with his parents, Dick is predeceased by his only sister, Lillian Tews-Sprague. Dick was a graduate of the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. After graduation, he flew F86 and F100 Sabre Jets in the Nebraska Air Guard.

During the 1960's and 1970's, Dick managed Anheuser-Busch districts in Montana and San Diego, as well as Anheuser-Busch Brewery branches in Glendale and San Fernando, CA. Dick's most demanding challenge with Anheuser-Busch, was daily contact with: Vice President of the Western United States, John Flanagan; and with August Busch III, St. Louis Missouri. In 1972, Dick purchased the local Anheuser-Busch Distributorship and successfully served as president until his retirement in 1999.

During, and after his retirement, Dick was a proud member of the Redding community and cherished his involvement in many organizations including the QB's (or Quiet Birdmen).

Dick was truly an individual that "worked to live". His outside interests and talents are too numerous to catalog here. His love of airplanes, a cold Budweiser with friends, and music were constants throughout his entire life. Always quick with a joke or a story, Dick brightened many lives. He will be remembered for his talents as an entertainer and for always showing others a good time.

Dick is survived by his wife, Elaine, his daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Lance Goble and granddaughter Savannah; Elaine's three children: Mike McBryde, Mark McBryde, and Traci Sartain Burton; as well as four grandchildren: Drake Lerma, Khayla Burton, Katie McBryde, and Megan McBryde.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Haven Humane Society, PO Box 992202, Redding, CA 96099.

I met Dick Tews just a few months ago - just for 5 minutes at the Benton Airshow 2017. I just knew there was something else about him, a gentle giant with a lot of History to back him up. My deepest sympathies to the families...

He taught me a little about life, a little about formation flying, and everything I know about Budweiser. A man's man, and a true gentleman.

Very sad the passing of a great man. My condolences to the Tews family. I got to experience aviation the Tews way. He would always share his airplanes with other people, including complete strangers. You might be a person at an airshow or aviation day event and he would grab a stranger and strap them into his T-34 and these people got the ride of a lifetime. A very generous man is an understatement. Thanks for all the fun Mr Tews, and God bless you and your family.

Dick was a larger-than-life personality in Shasta county. We extend our deepest sympathies to Elaine and the family for their loss. Peggy and I first met Dick around 1982, and were struck by his love for Elaine and how he just beamed when he was around her. His patriotism, wonderful sense of humor, and love for the Redding area will be how we will remember him.

We didn't know Dick for a long time. Only met when we both moved to Reno about the same time. We enjoyed both Dick & Elaine very much & became very good friends quickly. We will miss him very much. Our deepest sympathy to the Tews family.

I had the good fortune to be at Dick and Elaine's wedding as maid-of-honor, then 25 years later to return all expenses paid to celebrate.
When I think of Dick, I think of Integrity.
I remember him saying how he loved black jack gum and found It sad that he couldn't find It anymore. On his 60th birthday, I gave him a carton of black-jack and he acted like I gave him a brick of gold. Dick appreciated the little things. I truly believe Elaine and Dick were soul mates.
He will be missed by all that knew him.

Sincerely, Ruthann Chiara
