ALLEN SPERRY Obituary

SPERRY, ALLEN McBRIER Allen McBrier Sperry, 89, of Litchfield, CT, peacefully departed December 23rd, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Gail P. Sperry. Allen was born April 12, 1926, in Waterbury, CT to Mark Leavenworth Sperry, Jr. and Lois McBrier Sperry. Allen graduated from St. Paul’s School, Concord, NH, class of 1944; Yale University, New Haven, CT with a BA in Economics, class of 1948; and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, Boston, MA, where he received an MBA with Distinction, class of 1958. He served in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean War. His professional career was spent in manufacturing. He worked at the Scoville Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, CT as a Methods Engineer and as a Production Control Manager. In 1963 he was the founder, President, and Chairman of the Board of Metallon Inc. in Thomaston, CT, a company still thriving today. In 1969 he was invited to run the Turner and Seymour Manufacturing Company in Torrington, CT. He was its President and then Chairman of the Board until its sale in 2012. He was a member of the Litchfield Country Club and the Sanctum Club of Litchfield. His passions were his family, his vegetable garden and travel. Over his life he was a Director of the Waterbury Boy’s Club, a Director of the Waterbury Savings Bank, a Trustee of the Waterbury Hospital, and Chairman of the Church Council of the Middlebury Congregational Church. Additionally, he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the St. Margaret’s McTernan School, on the Torrington Advisory Board of the Hartford National Bank, a Director of the Seitz Corporation, a Director of the Torrington Area Chamber of Commerce and a Trustee of the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and of the Milton Congregational Church. He is survived by his wife, Gail P. Sperry of Litchfield, CT and six children: Melyn Sperry Robinson of Wokingham, England; Allen McBrier Sperry, Jr of New York City, NY; Benjamin Oxnard Sperry of Cleveland Heights, OH, Catherine Stillman Sperry of Southbury, CT; Thomas Leavenworth Colman Sperry of Portland, OR; and Sarah Sperry Hehman of Sebastopol, CA. He is also survived by four step children: Nina Cobb of Kentfield, CA; Amanda Kane of Winnetka, IL; Kyle Galloway of Louisville, KY; and Alexandra Lawlor of Tortola, BVI. In addition he leaves six grandchildren: Kirsten Williams, Lindsay Robinson, Alexandra and Mark Sperry; Sophie and Jane Sperry; and Oliver and George Hehman. He also leaves five step grandchildren: Greyson, Arden, Aurora, Beckett and Ryder Galloway; Abigail Prewitt and Kassidy Lawlor; and one great grandchild Fraser Williams. Burial will be private. The Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield, CT is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Litchfield on Tuesday, December 29th at 2 PM. Allen spent his life giving to the Community.
