STANLEY HERMAN Obituary

Riverton: Stanley Herman, 1927-2017, was born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Louis and Molly (Margulies) Herman. Stan served in the U.S. Army after WW II. He was stationed in Japan until 1946. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1950, was accepted at Harvard and earned his law degree there. Though Stan practiced for a few years with his father in the city, in '56 he returned to the area he had come to love during summers in the 1930's when his parents vacationed at Cook's Place in Riverton. Stanley was welcomed by the Cook family and maintained a residence there for the rest of his life. Stan served as prosecutor in Winsted for 4 years but when the Public Defender's position opened up in the Litchfield Superior Court, he took the opportunity to change sides. The new office was well suited to his temperament and he served admirably for 25 years until retirement in 1990. Stan was an avid sports fan and traveled to many college football games in his younger days. He played a mean game of paddle ball at the "Y" two days a week for many years. He was a voracious reader of histories and biographies and could quote Churchill, FDR and John L. Lewis. Stan was a generous and loyal friend. He will be missed by all. There will be a wake at Maloney Funeral Home 55 Walnut Street, Winsted, on Friday, June 23, 2017, 6-8 PM. Burial will be at 1100 AM, Saturday, the 24th at Riverton Cemetery in Riverton. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to donate to the Winsted YMCA in Stan's name at 480 Main Street, Winsted, CT 06098. To leave an online condolence, please visit Maloney Funeral Home, Inc.

I worked as a prosecutor opposite Stanley from 1975 to his retirement in 1990. He was a gentleman and a scholar and epitomized kind of lawyer we look for today. He always found something to say even for the most wretched of his clients.
