Edward Biggs Obituary

Edward Glenn Biggs

June 10, 1932 - May 26, 2015

Glenn Biggs was born in a small ranching community near San Angelo to Ben and Clara Stucke Biggs on June 10, 1932 and went to his Heavenly home on May 26, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, his older sister, Earlene Rhodes and younger brother, Joe Biggs. Glenn graduated from Eldorado High School. He attended Baylor University where he later served as chairman of the Board of Regents. There, he met the love of his life, Ann Carolyn Dendy. They were married July 29, 1955 in Memphis, Tennessee.

After leaving Baylor, Glenn joined the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, beginning his involvement in economic development and community service. His association with J.C. Hunter, Abilene oil man and owner of a large West Texas ranch, lead to the promotion and sale of the 78,000 acre Guadalupe Mountain Ranch to become the Guadalupe Mountain National Park in 1966. Glenn received an Honorary Doctorate degree from Hardin-Simmons University.

Dealing with the political aspects of the Park became the next step in his career. He became the Administrative Assistant to the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, Ben Barnes.

In 1970, Glenn moved to San Antonio and served as Chairman and major shareholder of First National Bank of San Antonio. The bank was sold to InterFirst Bank which eventually became Bank of America.

During the gas crisis, Glenn served on San Antonio's City Public Service board from 1974-1987, serving as chairman for seven years and helping to negotiate a settlement with South Texas Nuclear Project providing lower energy cost, from which we all benefit today!

In the early 1990's, Glenn joined a consortium to try to bring High Speed Rail to Texas- TGV--- a great idea whose time had not yet come.

After his active role in banking in San Antonio, he and partners, Jack Griggs and Steve Mack purchased several community banks culminating with Texas Heritage Bank in Boerne and Leon Springs.

Glenn served on numerous boards including InterFirst Corp., Central and Southwest Corp. (AEP), Valero Energy, Diamond Shamrock R&M, Bolivian Power, Tecnicas Reunidas of Madrid, Spain, National Western Life Insurance, Zachry Company, Kansas Gas and Electric, and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. He was on the advisory boards and a Trustee of Southwest Research Institute, University of Texas at San Antonio, UT Health Science Center and Morningside Ministries.

Glenn loved the Lord with all his heart and was an active member of First Baptist Church. In addition to Ann, his loving wife of almost 60 years, Glenn is survived by his two sons, Barry Biggs (Sakkara) and Brian Biggs (Melinda), his adoring grandchildren, Courtney, Katherine, Caroline and Barrett Biggs, his aunt, Lillie Burger, brother-in-law, Don Dendy (LouAnn) and sister-in-law, Marty Hinson (Floy), and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Glenn's loving caregivers, Sandy Forrester, Heidi Pierre and the caring staff at Colonial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to UT Health Science Center San Antonio, the Alzheimer's Association, First Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough. A service honoring Glenn's life will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 515 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, TX 78215.

You are invited to sign the guestbook at www.porterloring.com.
