Mary Holliman, 80, of Blacksburg, Va., born January 28, 1930, passed away on August 13, 2010, in Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem, Va. from complications of heart disease. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her death. She is survived by her son, C. She was preceded in death by her younger son, Daniel R. Holliman, M.D., in 2008.
She will be sorely missed but forever remembered for her many achievements and service to family and the community. She was involved in multiple projects and programs to improve life for others in Blacksburg and in Southwestern Virginia. Mary was an active member of the Blacksburg Ruritan Club and other local civic organizations. She was very devoted to her family and gave fully of herself to aid and support family members.
Completely on her own, she founded the book publishing firm of "Pocahontas Press" and published numerous books with an emphasis on books about Southwestern Virginia history and culture. Her hobbies included gardening, photography, oil painting and she was an avid reader of novels and history books.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life and achievements will be held Saturday, September 18, 2010, at 7 p.m. at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church.

Mary Holliman published my first book (Beyond Their Dreams) and included me in a NYC reading event she held thereafter. Her encouragement has led to my publishing three subsequent books of poetry. I think of her often with appreciation and gratitude. Mildred J. Nash

Mary, though you have passed, what you have contributed is here and always will be. Your honorable dignity and carefully considered fair-minded decisions and advisories have lastingly enriched and informed public life here and are beautiful and encouraging to remember.

Mary published my first book of poetry many years ago--and we kept in touch from then on (including a wonderful "Small Press Bookfair" weekend in New York City, at which she had arranged for me to read). Our last phone conversation--in late June--she was busily checking to see the status of my STARS FOR STARTERS, A Night Sky Poetry Guide, which she'd wanted to publish. I shall forever be grateful for her support of my work...and for our conversations around local politics, another common cause we shared. She was a generous and intelligent individual!

My Aunt Mary was a remarkable person , completely ahead of her time but concurrently right on time. Her intellect was formidable but she was always very able to communicate with anyone. Her energy was legendary in accomplishing whatever the task at hand. She was faithful to her family in many ways , but also faithful to her deep sense of what was right and wrong in this world. She often made good on her beliefs through action. Vivacious to a fault it is hard to imagine that she was passed from us so quickly. It was only a few months ago that she was in Lewisburg helping her sister ( my mother ) cope with the death of my father. I will miss political discussions , family stories and always a warm welcome very much. So goodbye Aunt Mary. Your life has made those of us you have touched all the richer for knowing you. Thank you always.

Aunt Mary was like a second mother to me. She inspired me to write, draw and to believe that I can do anything I put my mind to. It is because of her that I am now a published poet. I love you Aunt Mary! We will miss you!

I worked with Mary as part of the Valley Interfaith Child Care Center board. She cared deeply about that effort and used her many skills as a writer and publisher to help 'move it along'. She made so many contributions to the Blacksburg community. She will be missed.
