Quinten Barclay Obituary

QUINTEN P. BARCLAY, 65 ROCKFORD - Quinten P. Barclay, 65, of Rockford passed away after a short illness Thursday, April 7, 2011, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, with his family by his side. Born March 19, 1946, in Tampico, the son of Lowell and Hazel (Woosley) Barclay. He was a 1964 graduate of Tampico High School. Quinten proudly served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1964 to 1971. He trained as a medical specialist at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, achieving the rank of E5. While serving in the military back in Illinois, he earned his degree in 1968 from the Institute of Drafting and Technology in Morrison. After moving to Rockford, he worked at Illinois Water Treatment in the sales department and was promoted to manager of marketing services after one year. Later, inspired by his experience there, Quint started his own business, Marketing Communications Associates in Mendota. In 1974, he merged his company with Cummings, McPherson, Jones and Porter Advertising, Rockford. It was there that he met his bride, Martha Aramovich, who was employed as an art director. They were married Oct. 20, 1979, the same year he became vice president of the agency. In 1983, he became president and then co-owner of Cummings. Over the next 26 years, he helped the company succeed and grow to become one of the top 100 business-to-business agencies in the U.S., acquiring many international clients as well. Quint was especially proud to see Cummings celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2006. He truly enjoyed his years there and valued the working relationships he had with his clients and associates, many of whom became his good friends. Quint retired as president and CEO of Cummings in 2009. Quint pursued many interests throughout his life, but boating was his passion. From years vacationing on Lake Wisconsin, he found a love for being on the water. He and Martha started their boating adventures on the Rock River and eventually went to the Mississippi River, where they spent 21 wonderful years enjoying time with family and friends aboard his beloved "Scotch 'N Water" and "Island Dream." Being in the Caribbean was always a favorite travel destination for him. Quint was an accomplished woodworker and photographer. An excellent cook, he was famous for his backyard barbecues. His family treasured the special meals he made for them. He was a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers, John Wayne and Jimmy Buffett. He was known for his zest for life, great conversations, and wonderful sense of humor. So many will miss his laughter and fun times shared together. Quint was devoted to his country and so proud to be an American; he was a true patriot. Most of all, he loved and cherished his family. He was a wonderful husband and father and will be missed more than words can say. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Martha; daughter, Marissa Ellen Barclay of Rockford; son, Ian Christian (Meghan) Barclay; and grandchildren, Jake, Allison, Gabriella and Cole, all of Chicago; aunt, Helen Woosley of Merrimac, Wis.; cousin, Glenda Woosley of Appleton, Wis.; cousins, Gail (Joe) Litwiller of Danvers and Janet Reisinger of Carlock; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann (Alan) Bjork of Rockford and Marcia (David) Bogle of Naperville; three nieces and a nephew. He also leaves behind very special friends, John and Kathy Wogen, Doug Bornhuetter and John and Gloria Brda, along with many wonderful friends and colleagues and "the boys", Buddy and Bing. Predeceased by parents; aunt and uncle, Bonnie and Tommy Thompson; uncle, Glen Woosley; father- and mother-in-law, Leo and Mary Ellen Aramovich; sister-in-law, Maren McLaughlin; cousin, Laura Jean Child; and special dog, Cayman. Quint's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Michael Kouimelis and his staff, Dr. Ajaz Khan and Dr. Theodore Ingrassia. Also, sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of 4 West, the Palliative Care team and staff, as well as nurse, Victoria Zhang McCoy of 1 South for the wonderful care and support he received at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. My sincere condolonces to Martha and Marissa. Quint and I were business acquaintences for many years and, while we didn't always agree, I respected and learned from his career full of experiences and stories. I recall sharing many enjoyable and humorous occassions with Quint.

I also was shocked to hear the news and wish to send my sincere thoughts to all. Quint and I go back to the early 70's, and the stories and advice he gave me on our many road trips certainly helped to mold me. He was a good friend and never candy coated advice, which found him almost always right. I treasured his candid guidance and know he helped me in my career and life, and he was probably the most loyal client I have ever had. We shared many laughs relating the experiences that 30+ years of working together can bring. From molten steel pours to intricate electronics, I was amazed at his knowledge of the clients we serviced and their products, as he had a special interest in knowing how it all worked. A great problem solver, a true motivator and my own John Wayne...I surely will miss him, but our stories will live on.....and we have the photos to prove them!
Martha, I have known you longer than I did Quint, and I know that your memories weave a beautiful portrait of him. Tough, kind, difficult, gentle...he had so many endearing qualities and was truly a one of a kind. I am so saddened by the loss and will miss that smile and belly laugh. My condolences to you all....

I worked for Q.B. (our nickname for Quinten at the Cummings office) for over 10 years. Crusty, gruff, in-your-face, opinionated....and the best boss I've ever had.
I'll be out of town this weekend and am very, very sorry I can't be with Martha and family and friends at the "Big Guy's" services. My most common memory of Q.B. is walking by his office...him catching my eye...and without a word slowing moving his finger in the "come here" motion. That move struck fear in my heart many-a-time!
Q.B. taught me how to stand up for what I thought was right...he taught me not to tell someone to do anything I was not willing to do myself.
I already miss Q.B.....

I was both shocked and saddened to hear of Quinten's passing. His larger then life persona will surely be missed. It was his outgoing personality and personal approach to the ad business that brought me and our account to Cummings Advertising over 10 years ago. Stopping by Quinten's office was always so enjoyable, he always greeted me like an old friend. No one who met Quinten will ever forget that laugh. My heartfelt thoughts and condolences to Martha and the family.

I only knew Quinten as a patient. He always had a smile and that infectious laugh, even when he didn't feel well or he was PO'd about the restrictions on his food choices (and making stone soup!) I took the news really hard -- it all happened so fast. But Quinten strikes me as a man who didn't do things just "a little bit" -- more like go big or stay home. In the conversations I had with him over the years, I came to know he was passionate about a lot of things. We all learned from him and he had a style & presence that will not be forgotten. I will miss him. I'm so sorry for your loss; I will keep you all in my prayers.
