Jean I. Lewis

SPRINGFIELD - Jean I. Lewis, 91, of Springfield, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015. at Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community in Windsor.

She was born in March 1, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of James J. Madden and Frances (Hayes) Madden.

She graduated from John Adams High School in Queens, N.Y. She worked in banking and insurance in New York City.

Her first husband, Edward Brick, was deployed to England days after their marriage and died on a training flight that crashed.

On April 27, 1946, She married Franklin Lewis, also a World War II veteran. He predeceased her in 2010.

Mrs. Lewis worked several years as credit manager in Britt's Department Store when the Springfield Plaza first opened, later for the law firm of Whitcomb, Clark and Mosher.

After retirement in 1979, she assisted her husband with his volunteer work for the Red Cross and Friends of Springfield Library. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Altrurian Society and several other organizations.

Mrs. Lewis was predeceased by four siblings, James and Robert Madden, Frances M. Mulcare and Vera M. Schoepfer; by her first husband, Edward Brick; and her husband of 64 years, Franklin H. Lewis.

She is survived by her children, Joan L. Pagan of Southbury, Conn., James M. Lewis of Chester and Daniel Lewis of North Springfield; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, at Davis Memorial Chapel at 99 Summer St. in Springfield.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at Davis Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the spring at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Program or to a charity of your choice.
