Max KELL Obituary

KELL, Max
Retired pastor of El Camino Baptist Church and a 42-year resident of Sacramento, went to be with his Lord July 20, 2011. He was 88 years old. Max entered this world on February 13, 1923 in Lyman, Washington, the oldest of three children born to Maxville and Nancy Kell. He grew up on a farm in that small rural community about 100 miles Northeast of Seattle and graduated from Sedro Wooley High School in 1941. He was a member of the school's 1940 championship football team.

During World War II, Max served as a member of the United States Navy's Armed Guard. He was a gunner on several merchant ships seeing action in the South Pacific. One of those ships was a part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history. He received several citations and medals for his service to our country.

After the war Max returned to Washington and went to work for Skagit Steel and Iron Works and planned to be a machinist. In 1947 he married the love of his life Margaret Eloise Bryson, also from Lyman. Max's work as a machinist was interrupted by a call to the ministry, and he was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1950 by his church in Washington.

Max, Eloise and their oldest son left for North Carolina that same year so Max could go to college. He graduated from Carson Newman College in 1954. While attending college, Max served as pastor of Flag Pond Baptist Church in Flag Pond, Tennessee. In 1954 Max, Eloise and their four boys moved to Berkeley, California so Max could attend Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. While in seminary, Max worked at several jobs including one at a candy factory and another at General Cable.

In 1957 during his last year of seminary, Max was called as pastor of the small congregation at Pine Hill Baptist Church in Eureka, California, over 330 miles away. He graduated from seminary in 1958. A young Billy Graham was the guest speaker at his baccalaureate service. Max was a bi-vocational pastor for the next twelve years, working as a probation officer for Humboldt County while he continued to pastor that growing church. Two more children were born to the family in Eureka during this time.

In 1969 Max was called as pastor of El Camino Baptist Church in Sacramento where he served for 29 years until he retired in 1998 at the age of 75. Under his leadership, El Camino Baptist Church experienced substantial growth and added additional property and buildings, all of which were debt free at the time of his retirement. After his retirement, Max was named Pastor Emeritus by the Church. Max was also active in the larger faith community. He held many offices in local, state and national Southern Baptist agencies and organizations. In addition, he served as the Prayer Chairman for two Sacramento area Billy Graham Crusades and was an active participant in many other ecumenical efforts. At the Southern Baptist Convention in Louisville, Kentucky in 2009, Kell was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. Max was a member of the board of directors of the Sacramento Law Enforcement Chaplaincy for almost 30 years, and a chaplain himself for many of those years. In 2010, the chaplaincy established the Max Kell Scholarship Fund in his honor. At the time of his death, Max was also serving as the adjunct for the VFW Post 2324 Town and Country.

Of all his accomplishments and awards, Kell was most proud of his family. Kell was preceded in death by his parents, Maxville and Nancy Kell; his son Randy; his son-in-law Mickey Coppage; and a great-grandson, Moses Hance. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eloise Bryson Kell; his brother Lyle Kell and wife Dorothy; his sister Martha Bryson; his daughter Denise Coppage; his sons and their wives, Grant and Gail, Philip and Debbie, Neal and Faith, Lance and Becky, and Todd and Rachel; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was fond of saying that he wasn't interested in collecting anything but friends. Max will be remembered as a mightly man of prayer.

Visitation for Mr. Kell will be on Monday, 4 to 8pm, at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sac., CA. Funeral Services Tuesday, 10am at El Camino Baptist Church, 2805 El Camino Ave, Sacramento. Interment to follow at East Lawn Sierra Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to the Law Enforcement Chaplaincy of Sacramento or El Camino Baptist Church Building Fund.

Like Annette, I spent most of my teenage years listening to the sermons of Max Kell. He was always a godly and inspirational man. He taught me a lot. I will miss him tremendously but I guess it's God's turn to have him now. Max has such a big and lovely family to soldier on for him. God bless you Eloise and family. Hugs!

I was so saddened by the news of Max's passing, but joyful in the knowing that he is with our Lord. Max baptized me when I was 19 years old and I enjoyed his sermons so much in the years that I attended ECBC. I want to send the Kell family my love and prayers. God Bless.

Max was far more than just our pastor. In fact, I'd known Max and his family for most of my life, and that was before he came to El Camino. It was always a treat to visit Eureka where we had many relatives and meet up with the Kells. Max's sister and brother attended Northgate Baptist Church in Seattle where we lived before Sacramento. When Max's family came to Seattle to visit their family, the memories of their kids were always great . Max was called to Eureka to preach. Before they completed the new church, the congregation met in the basement of the old St. Joseph Hospital which, coincidently, was where I was born. With a little lucky timing, I could have been "Born Again" at the same site. Max lead my wife Holly to the Lord, as well as all three of my kids, Ryan, Kelsi and Hailey. He presided over two of their weddings, as well as mine, both of my sisters' (Krista and Karen) and brother Bill's. The day Max was asked to consider coming to El Camino was the same day Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. Max's decision to come to El Camino was more personally impacting than that event for my family and me. Max always seemed gifted with the knack of telling like it was, but in a constructive, helpful, and nourishing way. I listened to over a thousand of Max's sermons (remember, we used to have evening messages too!) as well as many weddings and funerals of friends and family. Max never left out the message of salvation when such personal important events occurred. Max was a believer in visitation. Long after he had retired as our Pastor, Max still visited my family during times of sickness and injury. He provided comfort to us and Mom when she was ill. Perhaps the most incredible moment was the evening of Mom's passing. Max and Eloise were there in moments, as Max would show his chaplaincy, pastoral and personal skills providing our family with an awesome very personalized prayer minutes later. Max left a tremendous impact in our community. Fortunately, he has also left many soldiers to carry on his legacy. Eloise and the rest of the family are certainly worthy of the phenomenal tribute of Max's life. We're going to miss that perennial grin and twinkle in his eye. God Bless the Kell Family.

Eloise and Family,
Max will be sorely missed. He was such a kind and spiritual man whose sense of humor never left him. He gave such comfort to my parents, Charles and Oleva Winterberger, over the years. Many fond memories were created for both families. Max(and Eloise)were always there for our family in moments of crisis and happy times also. He gave my parents such comfort and strength through the Lord Jesus and my parents received His Love with Max's guidance.
On 2.15.11 Oleva passed, Even though he was not feeling well he gave comfort to her and her four children and spoke at Oleva's memorial. He will always be remembered.
With our love to Eloise and Family,

Memories of Max flood our hearts and all of them bring smiles. I recall his enhancing his sermons by breaking into song. He described himself as a "practical" preacher. Thank you, God, that our children were taught by such a Christian man, a man who did not water down Biblical principles nor fear stepping on toes. We will miss you, Max. You felt like family.

Dearest Kell Family......
May God be with each one of you during this difficult time! Max was a wonderful man! I will always cherish the many times I got to talk to him as he always shared wise words and laughter. I am most grateful for the Bible he gave me many years ago (which really helped me through a difficult time in my life). I am also grateful to know all of you in the Kell family! Each one of you have your own light that you share with others. Max certainly had the light of the Lord on him and his path was a choice of goodness! I will always remember Max and his wonderful smile! If any of you ever need Dale or me for anything I hope that you will feel free to contact us!

Eloise and All,
I am saddened to hear of Max's passing. He was one of the great influences in my life. Even though it's been many years since we have seen Max, I have always wanted to be able to think of my family as he did all of you. While we will miss him for the present time, it's comforting to know he will still be looking down and guiding us from heaven. Best to all. Liz and Bubba Heard (Portland, OR)

Max Kell baptized all of my children, and presided over the wedding of my daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Jeremy Moon. His Godly counsel helped direct me through the toughest period of my life. If I haven't already, I will thank him one day. Until then he will be missed.

Dear Kell family and all those who knew him. We will always be so grateful for the role Pastor Kell played in our lives in the early 80's as we were coming back to the Lord and eventually started Pure Life Ministries. He was a solid man of God who helped direct our steps in the right path.

Our heart felt sympathies to the family and our heart felt rejoicing with the angels (and of course our KING) who got another one home safe!

Praise the Lord. Many souls have been rescued through this one life.

With much love

Dear Kell Family - My love and prayers for the Lord's comfort and strength to be abundantly given during these days of loss - yet knowing there is indeed rejoicing in Heaven as Max is in the presence of Jesus - I loved him so much during my time at El Camino, in the early 80's and - he was a very strong source of wisdom and inspiration to live according to the Word. I remember listening to Max's sermons for most of my youth, I learned a lot and appreciate his words of wisdom especially now that I am grown. He will be missed.

I grew up thru my youth years listening to Max preach Gods word. He was an inspriation then and now that I am grown I appreciate what he taught me even more. I was sad to hear of his passing, however I knew he went home to be with his father and we can all take comfort in that. May god be with his family. Annette
