ROBERT ARMFIELD Obituary

Bob was known for his quirky smile and some might say equally quirky personality. Admittedly preferring the company of animals to people, he was actually quite funny and charming once you got to know the man behind the bicycle. Like his father, Robert enjoyed a lifelong career as an electrical engineer with Ma Bell, working his way from the snowy roads of Wisconsin to the City By The Bay where he met his wife, Kathleen Emily McMahon, a beautiful RN from Ontario, Canada. After their courtship in the city, the couple married and settled in Sacramento. A WWII navy veteran and graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Bob was most comfortable in solitary pursuits...riding his bike, reading the paper over coffee at The Uptown or Lil Joe's, enjoying a cold one at The Stoney Inn, impromptu road trips with his old dog Alf, and for reasons only known to him, calling his daughter and granddaughter "George." Preceded in death by parents Harold and Marcella, wife Kathleen and sister Jean, Bob enjoyed taking his family on extended vacations to unusual, budget-friendly locales -- from driving into deep Mexico via unairconditioned car to renting an old bungalow on Kauai or camping along the Oregon Coast -- no Disneyland for this family, but always an adventure. Selective with his words or outward affection, his love often came in the form of food, whether farmers market oranges or homemade guava jelly, and later in life, supporting his children and grandchildren in their academic pursuits and other dreams. After a 2 1/2 month effort to recover from emergency surgery, Bob quietly passed away at his daughter and son-in-law's home in Pacific Palisades, his daughter by his side. Not the perfect man, husband or father, he will still be greatly missed by his Woodlake and Boulevard friends along with his son Eric Armfield, daughter Kristin Armfield, daughter-in-law Karen Armfield, son-in-law Captain Franklin Gelles, grandchildren Meghan and Stephan Armfield, and his unofficial pet cat "Cat." Graveside services 11am Sat Dec 4 at St Joseph's Cemetery in Foresthill, followed by an informal wake at The Uptown Cafe in North Sac at 1pm.

TIME/LOCATION CHANGE

Due to snow and in honor of Bob's lifelong involvement with his church, memorial service has moved to Saint Joseph's Parish, 1717 El Monte Ave in N. Sac -- this Sat Dec 4 at 11am.

We encourage friends to share their memories of Bob at 11am church service or 1pm wake at The Uptown Cafe, 1121 Del Paso Blvd. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the animal shelter or rescue of your choice.

Can´t believe it´s been 11 years Bob, so many come into and then wander away from our lives, but you shall never ever be forgotten. It seems like only yesterday you were here. I guess that´s because you were everywhere, and seen almost daily.
Ima come back and put a pic of us together on here. You hated having your pic taken, but I got more than one!

Oh Bob, I missed your passing...So sorry. I remember fondly our last conversation, you said a pic of me and my kids was within view and I winced that we had lost touch. Ahhhh, such is life but oh the memories of your presence each and every day at the Uptown, then nightly at the Stoney Inn where I happily served you, was so very appreciated and cherished. Like how I appreciated and cherished you as a person. Bicycle Bob will never be forgotten by me or Paul and Melissa. You are forever in our hearts!

Love, Debbie

Thank you to everyone who came to the service and/or the wake. It truly meant a lot to the family to be able to reminisce with you or hear about another side of dad's life.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to George, Kate and everyone at The Uptown Cafe...not only for the incredibly perfect pizza and beer wake, but for all the years that dad called The Uptown home. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

With Gratitude,

The Bob Armfield Family (children Kristin and Eric, in-laws Karen and Frank, grandchildren Meghan and Stephan)

Bob, it is with great fondness I recall working with you so many years ago. I remember you telling me kiwi's were the next "big thing". Had never heard of them before then. Rest in Peace.

Bicycle, you will be missed by many. Thank you for all the memories and sharing your special self with all us Boulevard characters. You will always be an icon and remembered fondly, and especially at Christmas since that is your birthday. See you on the other side my friend.
