Holly, Erik and Rachel,
I was very saddened to hear the news. I always remember him as being so friendly and warm whenever I was around him. I spent many of hours, day and nights with Rachel at your house. You guys and the rest of your family are in my thoughts.

My encounter with Mr. Saunders was very brief but memorable so when I saw his photogragh in the news regarding his passing my mind went back to that moment. I was in a Raley's parking lot and assisting my mom into the car and noticed a fire engine parked behind me with 2 firefighters standing at the back of the truck. Having just completed grocery shopping with my mom, who requires a wheel chair and me not feeling well, I brought the wheel chair around to the back of the vehicle to fold & load it, I hear, "Wait let me help you with that!" As a woman of 6'2" and by no means petite, Mr. Saunders assisted me at a time when that wheel chair felt like a 100 lbs. He was so kind and such a gentlemen. Mr. Saunders, thank you for your moment of kindness that day and reminding me that gentlemen do remain in our midst. Blessings to the Saunders family and his firefighting family.

I saw Jim's picture in the paper and recognized him right away even though I had only met him once years ago. Around the 4th of July holiday a few years back I was catching a connecting flight from Kansas City to Ohio. The airline there wouldn't let me through due to having two carry-on items instead of one. Jim was behind me and heard what was going on and helped me out. He also learned how scared I was of flying and sat with me during the flight and just made me laugh. He told me to bring my son to the firestation and I never made it there, but I never forgot Jim. The impression he left on me after just meeting him once---well I can only imagine what kind of husband, father and friend he was. I am so glad I had the opportunity to meet you Jim.

I worked part-time with Jim at Sloughhouse Fire. If I recall correctly I was there the first day he came in. There was a great quality to Jim. He was instantly your friend. I also knew he had my back which was important out there in the middle of nowhere with back up so far away. He was that kind of guy. Thanks Jimmie, I am proud to have known you if just for those few extra shifts at good old Sloughhouse Fire.... Dr. Douglas Ferguson, Retired Capt/Paramedic EGFD 1995

Jimmy Saunders was a captain at Jackson FD the couple years I was there, and since then I've never come across a person with a bigger heart or the drive and willingness to help people or selflessly put out so much effort for his community than this man. Hearing about his death makes me kind of take an inventory of myself and I'm coming up very short. He, along with a couple of the other "older guys" at the department gave so much of their time and effort (decades actually), most people just don't have a clue what these volunteers do. Jimmy did it for a living, as a hobby, and it was his life. He was always available to help people, and as far as the firefighters in the Jackson area, to give priceless training and advice to. He was a hell of a guy.

Jim, you were my favorite 'lil firefighter with the biggest heart and the brightest smile! It never mattered at what hour you were roused from your sleep or what the weather was like outside... you were always (for lack of a better term) happy to be there to do your job. I just can't believe you are gone, I will miss your hugs--the absolute best hugs that could make any bad situation better or just brighten my night. I will forever look to see whether you are climbing off the engine. Thank you for always being you!

Jim came into my families life when I was in high school. He became one of my little brothers and aggravated the crap out of my friends and I. I loved his impish personality and sense of humor. Although I haven't seen him in years, knowing he is no longer on this earth saddens me.
