VERN NICHOL Obituary

Vern Clive Nichol 1915 ~ 2010 Vern Clive Nichol, after a grand 95 years, passed quietly from this life on November 24, 2010. His life was defined by several stages: Born May 2, 1915 as a middle son of James Reynolds Nichol and Alice Marinda Wright, with six brothers and five sisters. Married Helen Rae Christensen and together they had three sons and three daughters. Later divorced and married Verna Nelson Leavitt who preceded him in death. He is survived by his first wife; sister LaVae Cook; children Gerald Clive Nichol (Jeannette), James Ray Nichol (Joan), Cathleen Riley (Dave), Lynda Davies, Richard Scott Nichol (Annette), Jeffry (Majorie) Leavitt, Jack (Chris) Leavitt, Richard Leavitt, Gloria Jayne (Randy) Austin, Diane Leavitt; 29 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. He provided for his family as a master carpenter, woodworker and other areas of construction. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and especially skiing. He started skiing at 11 years old when much more time was spent hiking up the hill than schussing down. He helped build the first ski lift at Alta, Utah, and served there as a ski instructor in the Alf Engen and Deseret News Ski Schools. He enjoyed competing in races in the Senior Division of the Coca Cola Cup, not "hanging up his boards" until he was 89. In later years he loved gardening and serving as a Temple Ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple. He and Verna served as the first ordinance missionaries in the Denver Temple from 1986 to 1987. Funeral services Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. (visitation one hour prior) Rose Park North Stake Center, 1155 West 1200 North. Friends and family may call at Jenkins Soffe Mortuary, 4760 S State on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 from 6 - 8 p.m. Thanks to Millcreek Home Health and Hospice and others who have made Vern's final years comfortable. Vern was a great neighbor and wonderful example of what we all should strive to become. We will always treasure the time we shared, the lessons we learned, and the memories we have of Vern and Verna.

Vern Nichol and I share a pioneer heritage through our grandmothers who were both daughters of Warren Ford Reynolds. Our ancestors faced big and very real problems and taught us to carry on the best we could as life happened. One of the strategies that enabled Vern to carry on was his sense of humor. May all of us who morn his passing look for humor and the good in all around us remembering the smile of Vern Nichol. I hope your family will accept my condolences and remember the happiest of the good times with your father or grandfather, cousin and friend.

RIP dear Uncle Vern... he was the kind, sweet Uncle, he laughed when I told him I named my cat after him and said he thought "Vern" was a good name for a cat. We always looked forward to the Senior Division of the Coca Cola Cup ski races because Uncle Vern and Jack Walker competed against each other, and they were both so good that it seemed as if they took turns winning the race! Thank you for being so kind and joyful, I loved you dear Uncle.

We would like to extend our sympathies and love for a noble man. He truly lived as Christ would. He was a very quiet, gentle, loving gentleman!! We are better for knowing Vern and feeling of his love and concern for others.
May we live our life so we can be together again with those we have lost.
May Father in Heaven Comfort and Bless his family who are left behind, but; know that he is with his loved ones who have gone on before.
With Friendship and Love,

Grandpa Vern at our wedding 08/08/09.

Years ago (When Grandpa was still in his seventies) I worked at a local ski shop, Grandpa used to come in after a day on the slopes with his friend Jack Walker and they'd talk about how much fun they'd had on the hill. I was always struck by their youthfulness -- they skied harder in their seventies than many of those of us then still in our twenties. I'll always remember Christmas morning brunches at their house -- all the grandkids gathered around the the big player piano, Grandpa flipping pancakes, the money tree... We'll miss you Grandpa.

I loved Vern very much. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a sweet twinkle in his eyes. His love of skiing was so great -- he really looked forward to winters to hit the slopes. He said he was born on a beautiful day in spring and he died peacefully as snow fell. I will miss him very much.
