MAXINE COPE

Maxine Juluson Cope 1913 ~ 2010 Dr. Maxine Juluson Cope, prominent nurse, educator and administrator, died peacefully April 18, 2010 in Bountiful, Utah at the age of 96 due to causes of her advanced age. She resided in her home in Salt Lake City until four months prior to her passing.Born November 2, 1913, in Hoytsville, Utah to John Martin and Florence Wilkinson Juluson. Married Richard Ludlow Cope on April 13, 1940. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Latter-day Saints Temple. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother (Francis M. "Bill" Juluson), beloved husband ("Dick") and sister (Wilmith J. Rees). Maxine was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various capacities in Hoytsville, Ensign, Canyon-crest, Parley's Third and Edgemont Eighth wards. An honor graduate of North Summit High School, Maxine received a diploma from the LDS Hospital School of Nursing and a post-graduate certificate from the New York Hospital - an affiliate of Cornell University. She was licensed as a registered nurse in the State of Utah in 1938. She was a high honor graduate of the University of Utah where she received bachelor, master and doctoral degrees. Maxine was always sought after in the employment arena. She never had to apply for a position. From 1938 to 1946 she served as assistant head nurse, head nurse, and surgical supervisor at the LDS Hospital. During a part of this time, the United States was in the midst of World War II and she served as an instructor for members of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps for which she received recognition for meritorious wartime service from the Federal Security Agency. Other positions included: clinical instructor and an educational director at the University of Utah; director of the program at the Salt Lake Trade Technical Institute; instructor at Weber State College; summer faculty member at the University of Maine to conduct a national nursing curriculum conference; associate professor and head of the master of science program in medical and surgical nursing at the University of Utah; dean and professor, College of Nursing, Brigham Young University; dean and professor, School of Nursing, Westminster College. Maxine was very active in state and national nursing affairs. A few included: chairperson for the Utah State Board of Nursing; state and national accreditation visitor to schools of nursing; member of a group to improve physical facilities throughout the nation; a nominee for president of the American Nurses Association; President of the Utah League for Nursing. Listed in several editions of Who's Who of American Women for outstanding service to the community and state for the advancement of health. Listed in the International Directory of Biography of Outstanding Individuals. She presented papers on state, regional and national levels and published broadly in key state and national periodicals and publications. With Dr. Cope's unusual clinical, educational and administrative preparation and expertise she brought prodigious growth in nursing and nursing education (qualitatively and quantitatively) on both state and national levels. Maxine was a remarkable woman and deeply touched the lives of many students, patients, colleagues, family and friends. She will be remembered for the many years of nursing and loving care that she gave to her dear father and mother and beloved husband during their very long and difficult terminal illnesses. She is united again with her beloved Dick and many others that she loved so dearly. Their reunion must be sweet. A very special thank you goes to our angel, Annette Torres, the staff at Barton Creek Assisted Living in Bountiful and Vista Care Hospice who lovingly cared for her. Maxine is survived by one niece, Frances Petersen, Salt Lake City, Utah; three nephews: Richard ("Dick") Juluson (Merlene), Bountiful, Utah; John Juluson (Cay Lyn), Richfield, Utah; Dr. Frank Rees (Mi-chelle), Salt Lake City, Utah; 16 great nieces and nephews and many dear and wonderful friends. Funeral services will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 12 noon. Friends may call from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the services.
