Donna Harward Obituary

1913 ~ 2014
Loa, Utah-Donna Pauline Bagley Harward passed away June 16, 2014, at her home in Loa. She celebrated her 101st Birthday on June 1, 2014.
Donna was born June 1, 1913 in Koosharem, Utah, a daughter of Edward C and Pauline Martinsen Bagley. She grew up on the family farm with six siblings and a cousin and aunt who had been taken in to their home. She raised doggie lambs and rode horses. She attended school in Koosharem until age fifteen and then boarded with families in Richfield so she could attend high school. She graduated from Richfield High School where she was a top student. She attended Snow College where she met her future husband, Royal T Harward of Aurora, Utah. Donna and Royal were married March 21, 1934 in the Manti LDS Temple and lived in Aurora for three years. Royal was a trained cheese maker and in 1937 they were sent by the Nelson Ricks Creamery Company to start the first Wayne County Cheese Plant. The plant was located in the old rock grain mill which still stands on what is now the Brink Potter Farm. They lived in a three room apartment with a single tap of cold water on the top floor of the plant. They moved into Loa town in 1942 where they later purchased and managed the business which is now known as Royal's Market. In the early 1950's they purchased a farm and dairy located in the Bicknell Bottoms. They upgraded what was known as Circle Cliff Dairy where they produced and delivered Grade A milk to homes, schools, and businesses. They also produced ice cream and cottage cheese. Donna was a gifted writer and teacher. She was a fine seamstress and quilt maker. She was an active member of the LDS Church in which she served in many leadership and teaching positions; including Stake and Ward Relief Society President. As a widow at age 70, she filled a full time proselyting mission to the Portland Oregon Mission. Her mission experiences are a treasure to her. Although her sight was very dim she studied the gospel everyday by listening to tapes and television. She loved to travel and has visited many countries and most of the United States. She enjoyed reminiscing about her many travels. She lived alone in her home in Loa.
Donna is the mother of six children; Carol and Dwight Williams, Teasdale, UT; Carvel and (Marilyn deceased) Colleen Harward, Las Vegas, Nevada; Ronald and Julie Harward St. George, UT; Newell and Gloria Harward, Loa, UT; Kendall and Margo Harward, Nampa, ID; Layne and Betty Harward, Farmington, UT. She has 31 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she can name, and place in the correct family with the correct spouse, children and occupation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Royal T. Harward; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Brian Harward; a grandson, Thomas Dwight Williams; four brothers and two sisters: Merrill Bagley, Ellis Bagley, Verge Bagley, Ben Bagley, Ila Mary Magleby and Vonda Anderson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 20, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. in the Loa LDS Stake Center, where friends may call for viewing Friday morning from 11:00 t0 12:30 prior to the services.
Burial will be in the Loa Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.

I'm so glad I got to meet Donna before she passed. I could tell, in our conversation, right away that Donna was no ordinary woman but had lived an exemplary life. My grandfather was George Henry Martinsen and Pauline, Donna's mother, was his sister.

Just saw the notice in the paper about the passing of Donna. Being a Loa native, I've known the Harward kids all my life and remember the store Royal and Donna ran. My deepest condolences to you all. Donna was terrific. I'm Brent Taylor, son of Eldon and Dawn Taylor, grandson of Leonard and Cora Taylor of Loa.

Donna was one of a kind. Brilliant to talk with in the areas of teaching school, trips both she and Royal had taken, and she always wanted to hear about where Bill and I had gone. When V.T. her, she had great ideas about the message. Bill has special memories about playing with her sons, visiting their stores and cheese factory. We feel grateful to have loved such a spiritual and unique woman.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Donna but am so glad I was able to meet her a few years ago. She was so sweet and alert mentally. I loved her immediately. Her mother was a sister to my grandfather, George Martinsen.

To all my Harwood friends and neighbors:
Your mother is a gem and a wonderful example to all who knew her. She was a friend to the young and to the adults around her. What a blessing to the family to have had her as your mother. We all loved and appreciated her also. May the peace of the Lord bless you at this time of her passing.
