Edward Davis Obituary

Edward Harold Davis
1932 - 2014
Sandy, UT-Edward Harold Davis died July 7, 2014 at the age of 82. He was born on June 9, 1932 to Harold Edward Davis and Freda Sainsbury. He married Grace Marlene Rawlinson on August 31, 1953.
As a young boy Ed enjoyed spending his summers on "the mountain" above Vernal, Utah, helping with the family business of raising sheep. His best friend was his horse Little Dick. He also enjoyed participating in many sports throughout his life. He was captain of the football team and also played on the basketball team as well as serving as the Senior Class President at Uintah High School.
While working for Mountain Bell Telephone Co. in Salt Lake City, he continued his education at the University of Utah, and he met and fell in love with his sweetheart Marlene. He also honorably served our country for 2 years as an officer in the United States Army. After his graduation from the U he continued to work in the telecommunications industry for his entire career.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing, but the most important things in his life were his family and serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he served as bishop and in several bishoprics and many other callings throughout his life. While in his seventies, one of his favorite callings was to serve as the 11-year-old scout leader, where he influenced the lives of many young men. He and Marlene served together in the Singapore Mission, in the SLC Inner City Mission and in a 3rd mission at the LDS Emplyment Center. Ed served as a coordinator in the baptistery of the Jordan River temple for many years until the opening of the Draper temple, where he continued to serve until a few months before his passing.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene; children Lowell Davis (Teri), Rebecca Layton (Stan), Julie MacKay (Doug); sisters Merlene Merkley (Bryce), Elaine Lowe, Catherine Harrison (Val); 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Sterling Lowe.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Alta View Stake Center, 1850 E. 8600 S. Sandy, UT. Viewings will be held Sunday evening, 6-8 p.m., Mountain View Memorial, 3115 E. 7800 S., Cottonwood Heights, and one hour prior to the services Monday morning. Interment at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
We would like to give special thanks to all of the wonderful caregivers at the Sandy Atria Assisted Living for their love and compassion and their friendliness as they gave great care to our father.
Everywhere they lived, Ed and Marlene served and loved all people, and as a result everyone loves them.

Dear Marlene,

We were saddened to hear of Ed's passing. We met him in Denver in 1965 when he was here teaching a class for Mountain Bell. Ed was a friendly guy and competent instructor.

One evening I invited him home to have dinner with my family. To liven up the meal, my wife Barbara added blue food coloring to it. When we sat down, unaware of the surprise, we found blue napkins and tablecloth, blue milk and blue food! Ed and I looked at each other, then at my kids and wife who explained the joke……… we laughed and laughed then and recalled it for years afterwards.

Ed gave us a copy of the Book of Mormon, which we read and discussed with him. Although we did not become Mormons, we gained a much better understanding of and respect for the religion.

Marlene,

I miss you as my visiting teaching companion! You and Ed are such great examples of love and service. I miss seeing Ed on his morning neighborhood walks always with a bag to pick up litter. We appreciate your friendliness to us as we moved into the ward. We just love you both! We are so sorry to hear of Ed's passing.

Dear Marlene,
We have wondered for months about you and Ed and how you were doing. Thanks you so much for sharing him with us in the baptistery in the Draper Temple. His little laugh and gentile, kinds ways will always be remembered. We are so sorry for you all at this time, but I just have to think of him listening, talking, telling stories and now having a bounce in his walk. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Marlene and Cousins,

Uncle Ed was a great person who had a great influence on the Ericson family. I had the blessing of hunting with Ed a couple of times on Diamond Mountain. Even while hunting, you knew Ed was focused on his family and The Lord.

We prayed together and listened to stories from his youth. I am especially grateful for the love and friendship I witnessed between him and my father, Ray.

May the Comforter be with you at this time.

Love,
Jim

Dear Marlene and Family,
So sorry to read of Ed's Passing. He was all that the obituary mentions---one of the special sons of his Heavenly Father. He will be valuable in the life hereafter. We will all miss him. I have remarried since my Grant passed away 6 years ago to a dear friend of many years, who also had lost his wife. We are both in good health and doing well.
Please accept my love and comfort at this time.
