Lawrence Allen "Larry" Reichenbach, age 80, passed away at The Wentworth at East Millcreek on Friday, February 13, 2015. Larry was born on Thursday, May 3, 1934 to Howard Walter and Kathryn Marie Hartong Reichenbach in Hartville, Ohio. Larry attended Hartville schools and enjoyed growing up there. He attended the Reformed (United Church of Christ) Church. He attended Kent State University and Case Institute of Technology studying Mechanical Engineering.
Larry enlisted in the United States Army in May 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was in 1956, during his assignment to the Army Language School at the Presidio of Monterey, California, that he met and proposed to his future wife Carol, as well as became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His foreign duty assignment was with the 14th United States Army Security Agency Field Station, Camp Hakata / Brady Air Base, Japan. He traveled extensively throughout the Far East as a linguist with the ASA, speaking Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Japanese, and Korean. He continued his college education while in the service by taking ROTC correspondence courses from the University of Maryland. He was released from active service in April 1958 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois with the rank of Specialist Second Class.
He married Carol May Kennington on Friday, July 25, 1958 in the Logan Utah Temple.
Larry's community service included serving as captain in the Hartville Volunteer Fire Department, as a board member of the American Red Cross chapter in Canton, Ohio, and three two-year terms as mayor of Hartville, Ohio from 1960-1965.
His professional career included positions with the F.E. Schumacher Company of Hartville, Ohio; Ekco Products Company of Canton, Ohio; the Jessup Door Company, division of A.J. Industries, of Dowagiac, Michigan; and with the Dow Chemical Company of Midland, Michigan and Midland, Texas.
Larry served faithfully in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his adult life, including callings as servicemen's group leader, branch president, bishop, servicemen's district clerk, stake missionary, stake high councilor, stake presidency, stake president, mission presidency, area executive secretary, temple ordinance worker, full-time missionary, and church service missionary. During his retirement he served seven missions with Carol, his eternal companion: Chicago Illinois Temple, Taiwan Taipei, Taipei Taiwan Temple, Utah Salt Lake City Temple Square, Europe East Area Executive Secretary in Frankfurt, Germany, Utah Salt Lake City Inner City Mission, and the Centerville Utah Employment Resource Center.
Larry served the Boy Scouts of America for over 25 years in numerous roles including pack committee chairman, scoutmaster, troop committee member, troop committee chairman, post adviser, post committee member, scouting coordinator (chartered organization representative), district advancement chairman, council committee chairman, and council vice president. This service was provided in the Buckeye Council (Ohio), Paul Bunyan Council (Michigan), Lake Huron Area Council (Michigan), and Buffalo Trails Council (Texas). In the summers of 1969 and 1975, Larry took his family to attend the Mormon Leaders' Conference at the Philmont Scout Ranch, Cimarron, New Mexico. In 1970, Larry participated in the Boy Scout - Priesthood "Mormon" Encampment held at Letchworth State Park in New York. In 1971, Larry served on a national camping committee seminar at the BSA National Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Wood Badge in 1979, completing his Wood Badge requirements in 1980 and went on to serve on Wood Badge staff multiple times. In 1982, Larry was inducted into Tatanka Lodge 141 of the Order of the Arrow. He was a recipient of the Scouter's Key Award, District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver Award.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Kathryn. He is survived by Carol, his wife of 56 years; three daughters, Kathy (Dave) Kinnaman of San Antonio, Texas, Cynde (Duane) Greenwood of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Diane (Ken) Barrow of Busan, South Korea; a son, Phil Reichenbach of Centerville, Utah; two sisters, Janet (Bob) Raebel of North Canton, Ohio, and Linda Shier of Louisville, Ohio; thirteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren with three more on the way.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Avalon Care Center, Heritage Place, The Wentworth at East Millcreek, and Envision Home Health and Hospice for their loving and dedicated care of Larry and Carol. We extend a special thanks to all his Jennings Lane Ward members and friends, especially Cal Christensen, who took such good care of him and Carol for several years.
A viewing will be held Thursday, February 19, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 20, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. with a viewing from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. in the Jennings Lane Ward Chapel, 1298 North 400 West, Centerville, Utah. Interment will follow the services in the Logan City Cemetery, Logan, Utah at 2:30 p.m.
