Ethan Massey-Rydl Obituary

MASSEY-RYDL
Our angel, Ethan Gage Massey-Rydl, beloved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin and friend, left this earth and joined his Father in heaven on May 13, 2010. His final days were spent surrounded by family, friends and special caregivers that Ethan had touched in some small way throughout his short, yet very memorable life. Ethan graced this world with his beautiful spirit on April 25, 2001 and each day of his life, he made this world a brighter place with his smile, his wild imagination and his loving nature. Ethan was the biggest little man with a kind, compassionate, solid, heart of gold. He loved going to the beach, playing with his friends and cousins, and swimming in the pool. He spent so much of his time planning big adventures and making elaborate plans for his life. He never met a stranger and made an effort to engage everyone he met in a conversation. Ethan attended Northern Hills Methodist and Community Bible Church in San Antonio and school at Huebner Elementary where he was a second grader. Ethan is survived by his family who loved him with all their hearts, including momma, Michelle Massey; daddy, Zac Rydl; Mr. Josh; Papaw and Gigi; Nana and Mr. Sheldon; Nana and Papaw Rydl; sisters, Harley and Katlynn; Aunt Erin, Uncle James and cousin, Cameron; Aunt Lolly and Uncle Nate; Aunt Danielle and cousin, Lauren; Aunt Tillie and cousin, Gabe; Uncle Sean and cousin Adian; Uncle Toby, Aunt Sarah and cousin, Connor; Aunt Stephanie and Nattie; Mr. Mike and best friend, Jaydon. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, May 17, 2010, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.

To Ethan´s family-
I doubt you will ever read this, given that is has been twelve years since Ethan´s untimely passing, yet I felt compelled today to dwell on his memory for a while. I never met any of you all, but I had the honor of being Ethan´s reading partner during my time at Huebner Elementary on what I seem to remember was a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Ethan and I shared a special bond forged by the heavy and unwanted burdens we each carried: I was born with spastic diplegia, a type of cerebral palsy, and the struggles which were part and parcel of my disability caused me to feel frustration and despair even at a young age. Despite the brevity of our meetings and the fact that I never once even saw him outside of school, Ethan´s indomitable positivity in the face of his own obstacles made an impression upon me which causes me to think of him even now, as a student in my last year at Texas A&M-San Antonio. Many who knew him better than I had the fortune to can attest to the fact that his legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.

I never met your son but, being a Huebner mom, I crossed paths with him on many occasions. He always brought a smile to my face. His strength and optimism shown through every little inch of him. His tiny voice made me feel warm inside. What a spirit! You were indeed blessed to have had him and he was obviously blessed to have had you. And now, he is in the loving arms of God.
Our family will be praying for your comfort and peace.

I had the honor of meeting your precious son Ethan last year at the Methodist where I work. Although the time I got to know him was brief, he had a huge impact upon me. It is hard to put it into words exactly, but I was immediately struck by his beautiful spirit, his amazing positivity, and - of course - his irresistible smile. There is much that we could all learn from Ethan. My prayers have been and will continue to be with your family.

I didn't know you or your precious Ethan, but I read about you on Lorraine's blog about Chrissie, and I prayed for your family as she posted updates about the situation. I cannot imagine the pain of your loss, and I know that nothing I say here can really take that away. Please know that you are in my prayers, and I hope that does give you some small sense of comfort.

May 17, 2010

Although we are very very sad that we won't see Ethan until we all get to heaven, He touched us in so many ways. He never stoped dreaming and he lived a fuller life in his short time then some people live in a many years. He taight us so much. He was so loved by many and he had the greatest family who supported him. We love you Bruce and Gina and our prayer's are with you that you will know peace and that Ethan was a gift from God.

I didn't know little Ethan personally, but my daughter is in 1st grade at his school. I spent a lot of time at the school this year and last and will always remember his smiling face! I happen to be at the school when you both came in to give the sad news. I was praying the news wasn't as sad as what I imagined in my mind since I didn't hear but saw the expressions, but it was. I am so sad for you both but I'm sure you will find the strength from your faith and family and friends to get through this for Ethans' sake. Rest in Peace little strong man! Douglas & Susan Monnin

I follow "Chrissy" and heard about your precious Ethan. I am so sorry for your loss. God decided to take your precious Ethan home where he is now whole and safe in God's loving arms. I hold May 13th as a special day in my heart, because 7 yrs ago on that day, my dad went to heaven. What a blessing to know my dad is no longer suffering, just as your precious Ethan is no longer suffering. God will continue to keep YOU AND YOUR FAMILY in HIS loving arms until the day you will all be reunited in HEAVEN. God bless you all.

I am so sorry to hear about Ethan. My mother and I learnt about him while we were reading Lorraine's blog updates about Chrissie, we were praying for him. I was trying to think of a suitable scripture that may give comfort in grieving, and thought about king David losing his son, and he had comfort that he would go to him one day. It is in Samuel 12. Praying that He will give you comfort and trust in Him during this hard time.

May you be comforted by God's presence, knowing that He understands your grief at being separated from your beloved child. I pray that God will grant you peace.

Michelle, I am so, so sorry for the loss of precious Ethan. This is Lorraine, Chrissie's mom from the PICU at Methodist. I cannot tell you how sad I have been about Ethan's passing. I am so sorry that I didn't get to tell him goodbye, and I'm so sorry that I didn't get to hug your neck and pray with you. Chrissie was having her own complications at the time of Ethan's gathering in the PICU, so I was unaware of what was happening. I am just so, so sorry, and I wanted you to know that I'm praying for you during this time that I cannot begin to fathom. I am so sorry, friend.
