Richard Paschal Obituary

PASCHAL
Richard B. Paschal

Richard Burl (Dick) Paschal died on December 6, 2010, at Brooke Army Medical Center. He was 77 years old.
A loving, patient and charitable man, Dick was born on January 18, 1933, to Glen B. Paschal and Hannah C. Nelson, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was raised in Des Moines and graduated from East High School in 1951, where he then enrolled in Drake University on a football and ROTC scholarship. While at Drake, Dick played varsity football for four years, starting as an offensive tackle for the Bulldogs. In 1955, following graduation from Drake, Dick was commissioned a 2nd Lt in the US Air Force and wed Norma Jean Decker, to whom he was married for 46 years until her death in 2001. After 25 years in the military, he retired as a LtCol in the San Antonio area and began his second career as an educator. He was hired by the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD as a teacher and football coach at, what was then, Dobie Junior High. Two years later, he became a guidance counselor at Samuel Clemens High School, where he remained until his retirement in 1994. He valued education and through his actions demonstrated its importance to his children and grandchildren. He was the first member of his family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1955 and a Master of Arts in Counseling in 1972. Upon Dick's retirement from education, he remained actively involved in the SCUCISD through the Clemens Band program and as a booster of Norma J Paschal Elementary. He also supported the Diploma Plus program of the San Antonio Downtown Rotary Club. Dick's passion was football. For over 40 years, he attended many Clemens and nearly all Texas Longhorn home football games. In the off-season, Dick enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Hannah Paschal, and by his wife, Norma Paschal. He is survived by his very good friend Roberta (Bunny) Tiner, and by his loving and devoted family, which includes his children, Patricia Garcia, William Paschal and wife Lisa Birdwell, grandchildren Gina Garcia, Steven Garcia, Scott Birdwell, Daniel Paschal and wife Lindsey, Matthew Birdwell, Michael Paschal, and great grandson, Carter Garcia. Visitation will be Friday, December 10, 2010, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Schertz Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at Schertz Funeral Home on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 10:00 AM, followed by a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: SCUCISD Education Foundation. You are invited to sign the electronic guestbook at www.schertzfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are with:

To the family of Dick Paschal: We are longtime friends from Des Moines, IA. Bill and Dick were classmates at East High School and Drake University. We were so saddened to hear of Dick's death. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Bill has many fond memories about high school and college days with Dick. Take care of yourselves and know others are thinking of you at this time.

In this time of Advent and on the last day of Hanukkah the candles symbolize God's everlasting love for all His creation. My prayers are with each of you who have touched, and been touched, by Dick's heart, for he shall forever remain a part of you, as you are a part of him. I shall always remember Dick as the always gentle and gracious soul who I had the good fortune and honor of seeing at many charitable fundraising events through the years. A warmth radiated from his being, a warmth that brought with it a quiet serenity. Having Dick in our lives was a blessing from God, a blessing for which we can always be thankful. Praise the Lord for His many blessings. May He cover you with His Peace and abiding love.
