Carl Auerbach Obituary

Carl A. Auerbach October 2, 1915 - April 6, 2016 La Jolla, California Carl Auerbach, eminent legal scholar and academic, died April 6, 2016 in La Jolla, California at age 100.Professor Auerbach was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 2, 1915. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1938, and joined the staff of the Office of Price Administration, where he later served as General Counsel. During World War II, he served overseas with the OSS. His academic career began at the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1947. He joined the University of Minnesota Law School in 1961, and served as its Dean from 1972 through 1979. In 1985, he became Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at the University of San Diego Law School, where he taught until 2012. Professor Auerbach concentrated on administrative and constitutional law. Throughout his career, he focused on the relationship between law and the social sciences, and the role of law in fostering democratic institutions and social justice.Professor Auerbach also served as a visiting scholar at several notable institutions, including the London School of Economics as a Fulbright Scholar; the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences; and the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace. In 1994, Professor Auerbach received the prestigious American Bar Foundation Award for Outstanding Research in Law and Government. He was a Life Member of the American Law Institute.Professor Auerbach was politically active all his life. He was a co-founder of Americans for Democratic Action, and a close friend and advisor to former Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. An article published by Professor Auerbach in The New Leader was hailed as one of the breakthrough ideas that led to passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.Professor Auerbach's wife of nearly fifty years, Laura Kron Auerbach, died in 1988. His second wife, Lenore Schulman, died in 2009. Professor Auerbach is survived by his daughter, Linda Auerbach Allderdice, son-in-law, Michael Allderdice, and grandson, Christopher Allderdice, all of Los Angeles; his son, Rick Auerbach, daughter-in-law, Barbara Auerbach, and grandson, Daniel Auerbach, all of Philadelphia.

I'm getting around to what I should have done before, prompted by the wonderful extended obituary article in today's local newspaper. My deep sympathy for the loss of Carl. What I admired most about him--and there was lots to admire--was that in disagreeing with him, as I occasionally did, he was always respectful and instructive, traits that are often lacking in many people, especially those in the law. There's much more I could say, but I am sure other, more capable people have said them-so I will leave it at that--He will be greatly missed, but his numerous accomplishments will live on long after him. marshall tanick
