GERALD GONZALEZ Obituary

GERALD T. E. GONZÃLEZ A unique and extraordinary New Mexican, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at the age of 68. He was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico, grew up in Santa Rosa, New Mexico and he cherished the childhood memories of the ranch at Pintada, New Mexico, living out of doors, herding sheep, and cooking beans and meat in the traditional way, in a pit. Gerald started an extraordinary adult life when he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Highlands University at age 19. Shortly thereafter, he joined the United States Air Force and eventually flew 100 combat missions over North Vietnam and 26 missions over South Vietnam, piloting the F-4C Phantom II. He received the Air Medal and 13 Oak Clusters for his Vietnam service. Back in the states he became a respected flight instructor and mentor to hundreds of budding pilots. After leaving the Air Force, Gerald was admitted to Harvard Law School and graduated with a J. D. in 1976. He returned to New Mexico and began a remarkable and distinguished career in law and government, including positions as Director of the Civil Division of the New Mexico Attorney General's Office, Chief Staff Counsel for the Public Service Commission, General Counsel of the Department of Finance and Administration, General Counsel of the Public Employee Retirement Association, and Santa Fe City Attorney, among others. Although many might consider the foregoing to be a satisfying and complete life's work, Gerald did not. He went on to become Chief of Staff for (then) Representative Tom Udall in Washington, DC, Santa Fe County Manager, Director of the State Bureau of Elections, and a media representative and majority legal analyst for the New Mexico Senate. Many will recall that Gerald's office overlooking the Senate Chamber at the Roundhouse was a magnet at any time of the day or night for dozens of close friends to gather and share thoughts, stories, memories and Gerald's warmth. Gerald was a lifelong historian, focusing on Southwest history and culture (and specifically of New Mexico's unique crypto-Judaic heritage) and the rich history of his own family and ancestors. His contributions to the collective knowledge are some of Gerald's most enduring legacies, which he generously contributed to the City of Santa Fe's recent 400th celebration. Gerald delighted in his loving wife Carey, family, friends, gardening, music, books, historical research, and living life to the fullest. This remarkable life was unfortunately cut short by illness. His family and friends will cherish memories of a warm, open, positive, and spiritual person whose ties to his family, culture, language and history made him a part of all of us and a reflection of New Mexico. Gerald will be missed. He is survived by his wife, Carey; son, Christopher Earnest González of Dallas, TX; son, Miguel Howe; daughter, Amber Darling of Lubbock, TX; granddaughter, Timber Darling; stepsons: Robert Deacon of Washington State, James Baker and John Baker, both of Texas; stepmother, Bibiana González of Taos; sister, Joyce Martinez of Taos; uncles, Joe Martinez of Santa Rosa and Rudy Martinez of Albuquerque; aunts, Delia Sanchez and Amelia Wallace of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews ;and cousins. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011, at St. Bede's Episcopal Church, 1601 S St. Francis Drive in Santa Fe. Inurnment with military honors will be conducted at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at a later time. His family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be offered in Gerald's name to: Amber Care Hospice, 660-D St. Michael's Drive, Santa Fe, NM 87505. Gerald was a great primo and friend to our family (Silvino Ortiz family) in Garfield, Loma Parda New Mexico. He loved to come down and talk to the people,(his people) down in theranchos. He was a humble and caring person. Even though my father "Silvino" was not an educated man and spoke little english, Gerald always treated him with dignity and respect. Of course, Gerald was one of us. His family was very proud of him. My mom remembers how my great grandma Zelfa Apodaca Gonzalez recounted our family history to him and how he always came by to visit her when he was down visiting the ranchos that his ancestors settled. His ranch is next to our place and we could never have asked for a better neighbor. My father "Silvino" passed away in June from pancreatic cancer. We feel your pain and loss. Gerald is now resting with his ancestors and friends who have gone before him. Que en paz descanse primo Gerald.

Dear Gerald's Family,
I met Gerald over the phone and emails because we shared a common passion - family history. He seemed like a wonderful person and I wish I had met him in person, but I met him in spirit. I will miss sharing our history with him. Peace be with you. Love, Prima Vera Lucero Las Cruces, NM

It was truly an honor to have Gerald as part of our family and it made me happy to have him as my brother-in law. He was the most facinating person I have ever had the priviledge to talk with. He had great stories and I hung on his every word. Just about the kindest, loving person I have ever known. My heart goes out to his entire group of friends, co-workers, family and my sister Carey for this great loss. I will miss you Gerald and think of you often....may peace be with you. The heavens got an angel.

"Speedy" as we called him, and I were insturctor pilots together at Reese AFB, TX in the last 1960s. We were in the same squadron and had many flying experiences together. I consider him a true gentleman and of the greatest level of honesty. To Speedy I say, "I'd fly on your wing anytime!?

Don Gerald T. E. Gonzales earned his wings with God. I will always keep him in my heart and light his candle at night and for his familia. I met Don Gerald T. E. Gonzales at the state archives many years ago and we share alot of about NM History. He was definitely the historian of New Mexico History at the best. Don Gerald T. E. Gonzales was instrumental in the implementation and defending the Police chaplaincy program for our law enforcement officer's and thier families in Santa Fe County. Don Gerald T. E. Gonzales, rest in peace. Mi Manito Hermano as always.

Dear family and friends of Gerald:
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time, and I hope that you are comforted by fond memories of Gerald. I will never forget Gerald lending a hand and an ear as I moved to Santa Fe as a single father. By then, I had already known him as a friend and had worked with him for many years at the Attorney General's Office. We both went on to many other things after that, but he always remained my friend.
He possessed such a depth of character, sincere, honorable and kind, always caring, with a smile and a chuckle. Even now, I feel him consoling and comforting me as I grieve his loss! Gerald, we will forever carry you in our hearts as you have touched so many! You lived life to the fullest, and I am better for having known you. I will miss you!

There are no words that can console the grief that Gerald's family and friends are experiencing. He was truly a wonderful person who had wonderful talents and skills. Excellence was his norm! I am grateful to have shared our growing up days all the way through college and occasionally through the years beyond. He was a primo who treated me like an extra sister and thus his name for me was "Sis". He cherished family enough to stop by to visit whenever he was in town, or buzz the skies above Santa Rosa! Once he even surprised me with a quick stop in California one afternoon long, long ago in his snazzy Corvette just to say, "Hi". He kept the family connection as well as the family history - and then handed out copies!
My heartfelt sympathies to Carey and his children and to Joyce and her family, as well as his tios and tias. Rest in Peace, Gerald, you will never be forgotten. Love, "Sis"
