Batman, General Oglethorpe, Elvis Presley, too many talents to name! Do you have time for a joke? His favorite question<3
Always loved and always missed!

If you took a walk through Savannah with Gordon you knew most people in Savannah by the end of the walk. The problem was it took 40 minutes to go one block but you never really noticed.

In over 80 years of living I have known fewer than a dozen
people who lived a self directed life.
Gorden was one of them.
So it is a certainty I shall always keep his memory alive.
He retained a youthful spirit through his entire life and when you were with him you were infused with that spirit, therefore one sought Gordon's companionship.
He was simply fun to be with. What a blessing, in all our lives, it is to know such a one.

Gordon was one of a kind. Generous of spirit he was always happy to see a friend or make a new one. He embodied the charm of a southern gentleman who embraced fun, was quick with a smile, a chuckle, a handshake or kiss on the back of a hand. Gordon was a unique figure in Savannah and will be missed. With the absence of Gordon Varnadoe a bit of old Savannah vanished.
Hugs and love to Catharine, Elise, and his family.

Spent time with Gordon on several occasions.

Those good times informed me of the privilege it was to while away a few hours with a man who embodied generosity and humor.

I was at a small gathering with my then wife Sara, Gordon, Catharine and Brian Connerat shortly after we had all rerurned to Savannah. Gordon said we were born again Geechees. Gordon had many things to be proud of. Being a Gecchee was near the top of the list.

Such a remarkable person, Savannah will miss him dearly.

It was my honor and privilege to accept Gordon's invitation to become Batman's official sidekick Robin several years back. The first time that we drove the old golf cart in the Tybee Island Heritage parade near St. Patricks day we ran out of gas even though the gage read 1/3rd full. Did that bother Gordon? "NO". We pushed the cart to the side of Butler Avenue and jumped on the back of the Junkanoo band truck with Gordon's friends from the band - all of whom knew Gordon - and finished the parade waving to all of our admirers from the apron of the truck (priceless). The next day we went to the Tybee Episcopal for the service and of course to see the band with Gordon's friends play at the church.

Our crime fighting team also road on the Rugby float in the St. Patrick's Day Parade delighting our thousands of admirers until we reached the point in the parade where Gordon knew he could see Catherine. Gordon stopped the whole thing until he could see and acknowledge the LOVE OF HIS LIFE.

Gordon told me that his mother told him that he knew how to do one thing well in his life. He knew how to "love people". She nailed it!. This brilliant and inovative man could not walk into a room without being greeted by friend after friend. We often went to the St Andrew's Day Banquet (me wearing one of Gordon's kilts). Relatives, friends, young men, dignitaries, television anchors and guest speakers all made it a point to spend time with Gordon. Gordon never reveled in this. He simply loved all of them.

Gordon. who became the oldest Rugby player in the state of Georgia, was a man's man with the world's biggest case for love. He participated in the Scottish games all of his life. I keep one of Gordon's "Aetna race for Kids" trophies on my nightstand.

Gordon loved Tybee Island with its people - Jenny Orr, Judy and John O'Neil, Julia and Mallory Pearce, Jack Boylston , Francis and Tommy Clark, all of the Bum's Parade Queens, Big Kahunas, Grand Marshall and many others. It is my opinion that Gordon defined good clean fun.

Margaret and I had wonderful times with Catherine and Gordon.

I will more than miss the many fine conversations riddled with jokes and pensive observations we had all over Tybee - especially on the porch and in the front yard.

What an honor it has been!
