Hugh Pendexter Obituary

Hugh Pendexter III - SAVANNAH - Hugh Pendexter III, World War II naval veteran, author, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, Armstrong English professor Emeritus, and Christian Science Practitioner, passed on peacefully, surrounded by his family, December 14, 2012. Waste no tears on my corpse, no late bouquet, For vacant flesh, though stinking, cannot smell: I'll squander no time on an outgrown body shell, And those who love will release me for my way. Praise me now, give me bright flowers today; Don't prettify regrets and toll the bell. Waste no tears on my corpse, no late bouquet: For vacant flesh, though stinking, cannot smell. When I have died, take living friends to a play, Plant trees, or teach school children how to spell; Remember me in laying brickwork well, Or idly sing a skillful roundelay. Waste no tears on my corpse, no late bouquet, For vacant flesh, though stinking, cannot smell. By HPIII In lieu of late bouquet the family asks donations be made to Habitat for Humanity, Futures for Children, Hospice Savannah, or First Church of Christ, Scientist, Savannah. Or, take friends to a play! A celebration of Dr. Pendexter's life will be held at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 211 East Victory Drive on Tuesday, December 18 at 2:00 p.m. Savannah Morning News December 17, 2012 Please sign our Obituary Guest Book at savannahnow.com/obituaries.

Well over thirty years have passed since I last sat in Dr. Pendexter's classroom as an undergraduate. He was dedicated, thorough, demanding and, best of all, inspiring. He never lost faith me in as a student or person. In turn, I worked even harder. You see, I simply could not let him down. I am eternally grateful for having the great fortune to be one of his students, as well as for his genuine, inexhaustible patience. Dr. Pendexter continues to inspire me even to this day. Requiescat in pace et in amore.

I can think of no stronger sign of a life lived well than that, at its end, fond memories overpower grief. Dr. Pendexter's wit helped make tutoring in the original ASC Writing Center the highlight of my college years.

Hugh will ever be remembered by me and my family as a man of sharp wit, a lively mind and a keen love of the English language as it was used to achieve the highest levels of art and poetic expression. His dedication to his students should stand henceforth as a beacon and an example to all who chose education as a profession.

Hugh kept alive the Poetry Society of Georgia for a number of years. He was untiring, gentle, erudite, patient, and a wonderful contributor of his own poetry.

Dr. Pendexter was one of the best professor's that I had while attending Armstrong. I greately enjoyed his classes. Just this week by some odd coincidence I was recalling his having talked about the Elizabethan play "Gammer Gurtin"s Needle" and today to learn of his passing is surreal.

Doc has been like a father to me for thirty years. I loved him with all my heart and although I mourn for his abscence in our lives I also rejoice that I had the blessing of being part of his. He inspired us all to be the best we could be. I salute his service, his life and his spirit. You will always be in our hearts Doc.
