Robert Sandberg Obituary

Robert Young Sandberg

(Bob or Sandy)

St. Cloud

Hibbing, Tower & Grand Rapids

January 10, 1922 - May 8, 2015

Bob Sandberg was born in Rice Lake, WI to Sievert & Ethel Sandberg. He graduated from Rice Lake High School and the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.  Bob and Martha Craig Way were married on March 22, 1947.  A union they both relished for over 68 years.

While at the U of M, Bob played Gopher football, serving as captain in 1946.  He served in the Army Air Corp as a Navigator during World War II.  After college Bob had seversal successful years in the Canadian Football League.  He was inducted into the Winnipeg Blue Bomber Hall of Fame in 1985.

Upon retirement from football in 1950, Sandy (to his wife and family) and Martha settled in Hibbing, MN where he operated his architecture practice until 1990 then in semi-retirement on Lake Vermilion and in Grand Rapids, MN.  He was an avid golfer, tennis player, hunter and fisherman.  He and Martha loved skiing and sailing.  They loved to entertain and enjoyed many memorable times with their numerous friends and business associates.  In 2010 together with daughter Bobbie and husband Steve, they settled in their current home in rural St. Cloud.

Bob was ever the entertainer, delighting kids of all ages with stories, tricks, mimes and antics such as his famous "rubber-leg dance" the "Ike and Mike" card story that he tailored for any audience and "walk-goes-the-lady" for the wee ones.  This was a gift that he continued to demonstrate throughout his final years.  In hospice for over 15 months the nurses often squabbled over who got to visit the Sandbergs that day.

Bob is survived by his wife Martha, children; Becky (Bill) Velde of Missoula, MT; Craig of Oak Hill, NY and Bobbie (Steve) Hentges of St. Cloud, 8 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son Todd, sister Connie Pile and brothers Lynn and Dixon.

Per Bob's request there will be no funeral or memorial service.  In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial to CentraCare Health Hospice in St Cloud.  A special thank you to all of the staff at CentraCare Hospice an especially Molly Dunn and Peg Winkleman.

Uncle Bob left me with so many cherished memories. He was an excellent story and joke teller and so much fun.
I´m very privileged and proud to be living in an absolutely beautiful home designed by Uncle Bob in 1958.

We cherish our unique Robert Sandberg home at 2432 11th Avenue East in the Lebanon district. We have heard many stories of this amazing man since living here and would have loved to have met him. All family members interested in visiting our home to see the changes over the years since 1956 when it was built would be more than welcome. Stop by! Rest in peace, Sandy.

We are so sorry for your loss. Mr Sandberg designed our home in Hibbing.. People thought he was building a gas station.. but turned out to be the coolest house in Hibbing.
My father.. Bill Quigley passed in the early 70's. Our mother.. Patricia Quigley passed last week..May 9th 2015. How appropriate..Bob, Patricia and Bill are hanging out in heaven.. planning a new design for a home!
God Bless

The news of RYS' passing has reached my northern Minnesota desk and it is with sadness and heavy heart I wish to pass along my condolences to Martha, Bobbi Ann and the remaining Sandberg Family. 1970 seems an eternity ago when Robert gave a skinny little boy from Calumet his first architectural job! Eternally grateful, forever thought of fondly and I never forgotten! You are all in my thoughts and prayers!

Bob got me started in the building design profession by giving me an after-school job working at his office when I was in high school. I will be forever indebted to Bob for this. What a wonderful man. My condolences to the family.

What a pleasure it was to have known and associated with the Sandbergs over the many years.

Very sad to learn of Uncle Sandy's passing. Love to remember all the Thanksgivings in Hibbing, on Lake Harriet, and LeSueur. He told me that the mashed potatoes were to keep the peas from rolling off your plate and the gravy was to make them taste better.
My love and prayers are with Martha and all of our family.
Our lives are better because Uncle Sandy shared his with us.
