Edna Pollack Obituary

Edna E. Pollack

Edna E. Pollack, age 96, died on December 18, 2012 in Seattle. She was born in Chicago on October 28, 1916, the middle child of George and Anna (Rogowski) Baum, and grew up on Mozart Street on the South Side. Edna met August E. Pollack at the Melody Mill Ballroom and they were married on June 18, 1949. Together they built the house in Lyons where they raised their two sons, instilling in them the importance of family and friends, and of education and hard work. Augie preceded her in death, and she moved to Seattle in 2004 to be near her son and daughter-in-law where she became a beloved part of their everyday life.

Edna also was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Irene Farley and her brother George Baum. She is survived by sons Dean Pollack (Betsy Wilson) of Seattle and Brian (Patricia) Pollack of Brentwood, TN; grandsons Justin, Michael, Jonathan (Amber), and Matthew; niece and goddaughter Sue (Benes) Bradbury; and many nephews, grandnephews and grandnieces.

Edna was a lifelong baseball fan. Her earliest game memory was seeing Babe Ruth when the despised Bronx Bombers played her White Sox. Edna also rooted for the Cubs and took her boys on the "L" to Ladies Day games at Wrigley Field. In Seattle she was an avid Mariners fan who enjoyed her many trips to Safeco Field, and the Yankees became slightly less despised after Ichiro was traded to them. Edna loved crosswords and word puzzles; she relished Bohemian food and bakery; she knew how to make the most of coupons and stretch a dollar; but most of all she was quietly proud of her two sons. Edna was resilient, resourceful, and loyal. She will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, 3117 S. Oak Park Avenue, Berwyn, IL on Saturday, December 29th at noon. It will be preceded by visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and followed by entombment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Forest Park, IL. Donations may be made to the American Lung Association (www.lung.org) or to the charity of your choice.
