Duane Quande Obituary

Duane Peter Quande

Duane Peter Quande was born to Stanley Lowell Quande and Genevie "Tootie" Britsch Quande in Seattle on May 27, 1943. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side at his Burien home on August 17, 2013 after a courageous battle with TTR amyloidosis.

He is survived by Mary, his wife of 46 years; sister Patti (George) Holmgren; sister-in-law Toni Quande; brother-in-law Terry (Sandy) Varner; sister-in-law Sue (Jay) Hopper; brother-in-law Chuck (Lisa) Varner; nieces and nephews Rick, (Tracey) and DJ (Duane James) Trout; Jami, (Pat), Makena and Riley Hanulik; Jeff Quande; Ashley Quande; Travis, (Tiffany) and Claire Holmgren; and Terra Holmgren.

He was preceded in death by his father Stanley, mother Tootie and younger brother "Little Stan" (Stanley Lowell Quande, Jr.).

Duane was very active in the boating community; he built his first boat as a teenager and explored the sound from Three-Tree Point to Blake Island. As an adult he was an officer and teacher for the Poverty Bay Power Squadron and a member of Seattle Yacht Club. Since 1967, Duane and Mary could be found in the San Juan Islands, or Desolation Sound, cruising with friends and family aboard their boats.

The name of his boat, Friendship, personified Duane. He helped anyone, anytime with anything. Every friend became family and every stranger became a friend.

He was past President of the Burien Lions, operated Burien City Garage for 36 years, and was a member of NAPA Auto Care.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Burien Lions Club, 15455 4th Ave. S.W., Burien, WA 98148, or Providence Hospice of Seattle, 425 Pontius Ave. N., Ste. 300, Seattle, WA 98109.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, August 25, from 3-7 p.m. at the Des Moines Yacht Club. Please go to www.yaringtons.com to share memories.

Mary,I was saddened to hear of your loss of Duane. We met in the early 60 when we worked on cars and motor cycles for hours everyday and our hands were always greasy .We enjoyed bike riding up at Bullfrog Flats with friends. Even though we moved so far away from him, his name has come up many times and I always thought of him as a "true friend" Duane was truly a special person, I am so lucky to been able to call him my friend. He will be missed.

Duane -
I will miss your smile on "N" dock and I will miss your sage counsel at Marina Association Director's meetings. Thank you for so many things. May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Goodbye my friend.

Duane,
You made me and everyone around us smile every time we saw you. Your jokes and attitude never failed to lighten up a meeting or topic. I was always envious of your bright personality, high level of integrity and positive outlook on any situation. I had a lot to learn from you and I will continue to ask myself "what would Duane do?" when times get tough. I will admit I knew you were fighting illness but I never had one ounce of doubt you wouldn't beat it. I'll always remember the last hug you gave me and the last handshake we shared. We all loved you.

I already miss hearing Duane's stories. They weren't always the first time I heard them but they got better each time! I also will miss his on going war with technology-namely the computer and phone.
Duane was a generous and truly caring boss. I have told many people how refreshing it is to work in an enviornment free of stress and drama.
How lucky he was to have so many long time friends and family, and how lucky they were to have him, my heart goes out to you.
